personality of names?

Do you think the name you give you child has any influence over their personality? I hve a Charlotte who is very strong willed and come across others who are the same. I also have a Molly (which I think is a softer name) and she is alot more laid back. I am now 15 wks with number three and hoping for a calm one!

The only girls names DH and I agree on are Lucy and Matilda which are quite differant types of name.

What do you think? Which goes best with surname Newby and with my other daughter's names?

I love Matilda but worry alot of people will hate it so honest opinions please

Mimithe rabbit do yu mind me asking if your girls have middle names? Just interested in what you would put with Matilda

I have 2 daughters - Lucy and Matilda so I think both names are fantastic! In terms of character, I always viewed Matilda as being a strong name (it means mighty in battle) but my daughter called M crumples at the first hurdle! Lucy, I think as being quite a pretty and feminine name, but my daughter L is very determined and single minded. I think that a child's character is therefore more determined by genetics and birth position (Lucy is the 2nd child and most of my friends 2nd chidren seem to be tougher than the eldest)than name.

Thank you Mrs Mattie. Can anyone think of good middle name that works with Matilda and Newby? Quite like Alice, Any thoughts?

Matilda is much nicer than Lucy and goes better with your surname.

I know a couple of Matildas born in the last year, so think it is gaining in popularity and unlikely to be widely hted.

Thanks. Glad no one said they hate Matilda. I would prob shorten it to tilda if I did shorten it. Charlotte has never been shortened, not that I am against it, she just is a CHarlotte! I just dont think anyone would hate Lucy but ay hate Matilda. Not that it matters, noone will like eveyname but just trying to imagine child growing up with that name. It is so hard!

my DH would agree with you regarding the 'personality' of names. he has always mantained that names ending with a 'Y' or 'EE' or 'A' sounds makes for softer sweeter children than those whose names end in hard 'N' sounds.

in some ways we have found it fairly true in the case of our girls.

we have megan, holly and natasha and megan is most certainly a lot 'harder' than holly or natasha.....altho that could also be the fact that she is the oldest (meaning it is birth order), or even as far as it being that she is an aries (and so blaming her star sign)....

or, it could all be a load of tosh and is down to her personality and she would have been the same anyhow had she been born youngest of my 5, under the sign of gemini (for instance) and called jessica.....

as for choice of your name now......I like both, but lucy is less likely to be shortened or nicknamed so if you are against shortening that may be the way you choose...

love matilda but think tilly and molly are too similar - what about chatlotte, molly and tilda for matilda?

agree with the personalities, my lexie is WILD and very strong willed where as ella not so much

not that it helps but I also love name Lucy too

I have a Benjamin who is very cheeky. I have met many people who say their Benjamin is cheeky also.

I think Lucy goes best with your other girls names.

Lucy is lovely, and every Lucy I've known has had a chilled out personality.

Matilda is also good, but on the feisty side.

I have a dd with one of those names (op) and is opposite to what you posted, so I don't really think given names influence personality!

Matlida is a gorgeous name

matilda can be shortened to tilly and thats sweet my teen dd has a triend called matilda and they call her hills
