in fact, on a thread the other day sorky commented on me saying that I do "lovely honest posts"....now she only 'knows' me thro my posts on MN, (and unless she is reading this probably doesn;t know my RL name), but it did make me smile lots reading what she wrote.

for liking my name......not many people say that. tis normally "oh, that's different", with a turned up nose (or maybe that is just how I think I see it/hear it??)

my name certainly influenced how I was treated which is why none of mine with have double barrelled names

hmm......you may be right there.

I guess that I would have been affected (ok, pedant moment....effect, affect), by the bullying anyhow (there was a LOT of it) regardless of name.

nice normal names go unoticed in that sense, so yes, not overly important to personality.....BUT

how is it that children start to 'look like their names' IYGWIM. I could never imagine DD3 (for eg) being a chloe anymore (this was the name I wanted....DH chose natasha), she IS a natasha!!! it suits her, and her personality somehow IS natasha rather than 'chloe'........(I hope I am making myself clear rather than babbling which I am prone to do)

I think that's a bit dofferent. That's the effect of other children's behaviour towards you because of your unusual name. I think that's different to being affected by being called Lucy or Stephanie.

pointy...I think names can have some effect....especially if you have one you hate and everyone at school takes the piss out of.....

my name was 'changed' by school freaks mates into a-flea-theopia........effected me for so ong that I told everyone that my name was Lea for a long time and hated my real name with a passion now just reserved for 'dawn'....

I now however LOVE my name, altho it does give me some notiority (sp?) as people rarely forget me.....and believe me, sometimes I WANT to be forgotten!!!!

I think Lucy is a softer name, but doesn't go so well with your surname. Personally not keen onMatilda, and also think it is quite a strong, fiery name. Someone suggested Alice - how about that? Lovely name, and would go well with the surname, and i think goes well with Charlotte and Molly.

Unless you are writing a sotry in which case it is very very important.

I'm with pootleflump - Lucy sounds strange with your surname. Matilda is great though and goes well with your other girls, although the middle name is a bit tricky...Matilda Fay? Matilda Jaye? Or the ever popular Matilda Rose, that works well I think.

I think that a name like matilda, with it having 3 syllables, needs a middle name with just one.....like matilda nell to take one example.

my DD3 is natasha, and we also followed with the one syllable and called her natasha mae. MY name is alethea.....my mum and dad also did the same and my middle name is dawn (which I hate with a passion, but hey ho......it does go well even so!)

sooooo......matilda, if I was using it for a daughter of mine, would therefore need a short sharp name!

lucy on the other hand can go with a range of middle names........

My two girls both suit their names, DD1's is more feminine and she's the quieter one. DD2 has an unusual name and she is wild.

Matilda is lovely and so is Tilly. I don't think Lucy goes with your surname at all.

Just to add, Eleta, when we told the paediatrician and a friend that we were going to call our eldest Tilda, they both commented that it was a brand of rice! We therefore called her Matilda, though do call her Tilda quite a lot.
