7 months pregnant wirh baby girl. my partner and i have named our baby girl Emmy, thinking her full name will be Clementine.

ive had feedback from others though that clementine is just a tad too unique (i dont mind feedback!). Wondering if anyone can think of another full name for Emmy that isnt Emily, Emma, Emmerson or Emmeline?

fhanks!

OP posts:

I've know a couple of Clementines who are called Clem. I much prefer your shortening to it!

But Clementine's friends are likely to call her Clem or Clemmie. That's the easiest and most intuitive shortening

I'm not so sure - if she's called Emmy day-to-day it isn't all that likely that her friends will need to come up with a diminutive.

Having a nickname that doesn't begin with the same letter as your first name is a pain as an adult. This isn't really the time to show how clever and unique you are ..

Is it? My nickname (that I go by almost all the time) begins with a different letter to my full name and it's never been an issue? I can't think how it would be an issue?

OP I prefer Clementine to all the alternatives suggested, aside from Emmeline which is also lovely.

My 14 month old is called Emmy, not shortened from anything and we love it just as much now as when I was pregnant x

I wouldn't go for Clementine as a 'long ' name for Emmie . Not because of its being unusual , which it isn't , but more because Emmie is not a natural diminutive for it and thus it sounds contrived. Emmeline or Emma are your obvious choices and if you don't want anything 'unique' I would go for Emma. IMO Emma is a nicer name and is more on trend now.

Or as a child! Much easier when sewing name tags on school uniforms - C Smith vs E Smith?!

HappyDane · 04/09/2024 10:24

Different people will have different associations with names/sounds. You'll never be able to please everyone. Give your baby a name that you both like and don't worry too much about anyone else.

Emerald. Not Emilia (horrible mealy noise.)

Funnily enough I always think that (the mealy sound) about Amelia, but not about Emilia! Odd.

Elizabeth? Rebecca? Amelia (Millie)?

Im sure there are more examples, but those are all common instances of names where the typical nicknames begin with a different letter.

Oor · 04/09/2024 10:07

You could have Noemi, Emery or Emerald (I don’t like them as much as clementine though)

or you could go with something like Molly Emma so her initials spell M E and get the nickname from that. I’d still stick with clementine though

PickledMuffin · 04/09/2024 10:07

Emeline

JimJonesLivesInMyHead · 04/09/2024 10:06

How about Emmylou? I love that name (probably because I'm a big fan of Emmylou Harris)

Carouselfish · 04/09/2024 10:05

Emmy could be Emerald, Esmerelda, Maria,

OneFastDuck · 04/09/2024 10:04

I like Clementine but discounted it because its a bit too common definitely not unique around here!

Oor · 04/09/2024 10:03

I would go with Clementine- it’s lovely .

I do also know 2 children called Emmy as a full name although one spells it Emmie.

if you choose Emme she’ll get called Em

Babychewtoy · 04/09/2024 09:56

Emme will definitely be read as Em.

If you love Emmy and that’s the name you intend to use then I would just name her Emmy - it’s pretty standard these days to have a shortened name as a full name. I think that feels more authentic than reverse engineering a name that you never intend to use.

I’m really not a fan of Clementine. And Emmy is not a natural shortening of it either.

FuzzyDiva · 04/09/2024 09:51

I know three Clementines (two are adults) and have heard of other children with the name. I think it’s possibly a marmite name (I like it) and is having a popularity surge.

Apollo365 · 04/09/2024 09:51

Never tell anyone the name before they are born. She is your child, name her Clementine

HappyDane · 04/09/2024 09:50

Otherwise Emmeline, Emily, Amelia.

Emme isn't a good idea, imo - she'll just be called Em, as that's how it's pronounced.

HappyDane · 04/09/2024 09:49

Oh I like Clementine, I think it's really pretty.

I think if you call her Emmy day-to-day from the beginning then it's really unlikely that people would think up another diminutive for her since that's already a good easy name to say, only two syllables.

Andoutcomethewolves · 04/09/2024 09:45

Clementine will very probably end up as Clemmie and even my very cool, very beautiful friend can't carry that off IMO (too much like phlegmy/clammy for me). I'm also not a big fan of the full name.

I'd just put Emmy tbh. Possibly Emme but with an accent on the last letter to make it clearer it's meant to be a separate syllable? Though that may result in Em-may.

Aussiegold · 04/09/2024 09:43

If you call her Clementine and her friends don't call her Clem Fandango, then something has gone badly wrong........just saying........

SatinHeart · 04/09/2024 09:39

Honestly, Clementine is a really nice name and not that unique (I know 2 under 5). I would use it.

FayCarew · 04/09/2024 09:30

Emme would be 'M'. Call her Elly or Emmie.
