I surprised myself that I like it. Not if you surname is Parsonage though.

I'm not particularly a fan of the Bronte sisters, I have read none of their books. So I appreciate that the name is associated with them, but it is actually a first name regardless of them.

So to be clear, I am not some super fan of their books, I just really like the name.

That’s what matters isn’t it, not a bunch of randoms on the internet.

A young girl at my daughter nursery has this name. It suits her

Everyone that knows someone called Bronte seems to like it, everyone saying it's the worst name ever keeps banging on about the authors

People say you shouldn't care what others think, but to a degree I do care. I want my daughter to have a nice name and literally the only thing putting me off is that other people don't like it.

I’m sorry, I don’t like it either. I think this is why people should not ask others’ opinions about names though - if you love it that’s what matters, but you asked so I’m answering.

Andoutcomethewolves · 30/08/2024 21:12

I'm in England btw

Andoutcomethewolves · 30/08/2024 21:11

Oh weird coincidence! I literally just (as in 10 minutes ago) met my very first Bronte. She was nurse taking me for an x-ray at hospital and was very kind and beautiful and the name suited her perfectly, I even mentioned to her what a lovely name it was! I like it 🙂

Why not call her Charlotte, Emily or Anne?

This.

Beautiful names connected with the surname. Don’t use the surname

Moonshine5 · 30/08/2024 21:10

100% no

FairyBreadQueen · 30/08/2024 21:10

Quite popular in Australia when I was growing up there (now aged 51). Knew a few. Always quite liked it. It was not an 'out there' name. I'm always a bit surprised when it comes up on baby name threads and people seem startled by it.

An unusual and distinctive surname associated with three authors. Not a first name.

That was my understanding, yes, and what I came here to say.

GrimeldaUpNorth · 30/08/2024 21:08

My pony growing up was called Bronte. My family and the pony’s bloodlines are closely associated with Haworth.

It’s a no from me.

I love it, I knew a Brontë once, she was great

I did too! She was doing a Phd on the Gothic.

EveningSpread · 30/08/2024 21:07

If you’re going for it because of the Brontë sisters, it might help to know that their last name was probably in fact Brunty and at some point someone in the family changed it so they sounded more well to do.

Also your child will be called brontosaurus.

Newuser75 · 30/08/2024 21:05

Oh I like it!! Seems I'm in the minority so far but I think it's really nice.

orangetree1999 · 30/08/2024 21:05

Lovely.

CLEO42 · 30/08/2024 21:04

How about Bronwyn instead?

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 30/08/2024 21:04

StSwithinsDay · 30/08/2024 21:03

Would you like to be called Bronte?

minipie · 30/08/2024 21:03

Don’t expect anyone to use the umlaut, ever.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/08/2024 21:02

It's a surname and has a special character. Two strikes against it.

Bryony?

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 30/08/2024 21:02

I'm sorry, I really don't like it. I'm not a fan of surnames as first names. But it doesn't actually matter what other people think...if you love it, you should use it!
