I really like it, it’s in my top three for a girls name!

SeagullSong · 30/08/2024 22:18

I knew a Brontie in childhood, does that spelling appeal to you? She was lovely, so I have very positive associations with the name even though I wouldn't use it personally. The idiots soon tired of calling her Brontosaurus, even at 8 years old, and most kids haven't heard of the Brontë sisters until they are (hopefully) mature enough not to use that as ammunition.

Agapornis · 30/08/2024 22:15

The diaeresis (not ümlaut) spelling was entirely made up by daddy Brontë, whose previous surname was Brunty.

When she's in the dinosaur phase, please call her Brontësaurus :)

dontdillydallytoolong · 30/08/2024 22:15

I like it. Unusual, but not a ridiculous made up name.

Lwrenn · 30/08/2024 22:13

I've looked after 2 Brontë's, one was an elderly lady and I think she was from Australia or NZ, unfortunately I didn't spend much time with her as I was agency staff but she was very beautiful. She was probably in her late 80s, she had stunning blue eyes and lovely smile, very warm lady.
Second one was a wee girl in a nursery setting, lovely little thing she was. Didn't sleep for her mum though but would have a full hours kip for us after lunch, funny the things you remember about people when it comes to names!
Both Brontë's were very lovely and the name suited them both across ages.
I think its sweet, also the little girl Brontë's mum called her Ronnie as a nickname which was cute.

@TemuSpecialBuy , "Just a suggestion but what about Bronwyn
(Pronounced bron-win)

Its easy to spell and say and has a nice ring to it."

If you're Welsh, it's bloomin' awful.

grlpwer · 30/08/2024 22:04

I went to school with one, always thought it was lovely!

Berlinlover · 30/08/2024 22:02

I think it’s a beautiful name.

BluebellsareBlue · 30/08/2024 22:00

I love it

PuppyMonkey · 30/08/2024 21:57

Never heard it before
Never heard of Brontë sisters
Never heard of Brontë the author
Never heard of Brontë as a surname

Sad
tonyhawks23 · 30/08/2024 21:57

its gorgeous

VelvetButCold · 30/08/2024 21:56

It’s a pretty girls name, which I’ve heard before and liked.
❤️

Bronwen. "Wyn" is a male suffix (like Gwen and Gwyn)

Ahh yes. Thanks for letting me know that

Sziasztok · 30/08/2024 21:54

Go for it. I used to work with one. She was great, and impossibly cool. She had a very unusual surname and pulled off the whole name really well.

Purplecatshopaholic · 30/08/2024 21:51

Love it. Strong, unusual, classy

KnickerlessParsons · 30/08/2024 21:51

CLEO42 · 30/08/2024 21:04

How about Bronwyn instead?

Bronwen. "Wyn" is a male suffix (like Gwen and Gwyn)

tara66 · 30/08/2024 21:50

People will always be saying ''What?'',.. ''What did you say?'' ...''What's the name?'' etc. and you will have to spell it out every time.

KerryBlues · 30/08/2024 21:49

Never heard of Brontë sisters
Shame. But most people will have.

MiddleClassProblem · 30/08/2024 21:49

Love it. It was on our list.

I have found that MN name threads have people leaning towards standard Christian names which is not the culture I grew up in or live in so I sort of skip comments where they they suggest those names as an alternative because they are not my taste bar a few.

BananaPeanutToast · 30/08/2024 21:48

It’s a sweet name and I have met an adult Bronte and she was lovely.

However, it’s a bit like calling your child Tolstoy, without having read a single one of his books (especially if you use the umlat). Everyone for the rest of her life will ask her ‘oh, like Charlotte?” or ‘like the sisters?’. It’s a bizarre choice to just choose it for its sound without at least reading the books to see if you like the association she’ll be stuck with. In the UK even more that in other countries as they are so well studied.

Some Bronte sisters associations are positive, some not so much.

An unusual and distinctive surname associated with three authors. Not a first name.

This.
Totally try hard to have it as a first name.

MyBrownEyedHandsomeBoy · 30/08/2024 21:48

I'm 50/50 how I feel about it, I keep saying it and it sounds more masculine in my head the more I say it at the moment... then again I know of a Bryony (f) and I think that's a nice name, but I only know of 1 in real life..

It's unusual, even if slightly masculine sounding (for me) but I think it it's a name that would grow on me.
I actually like Darcy for a boy but I'd not be brave enough to name a boy Darcy as I know there are far too many Darcey/Darcy/Darcie girls

It's your choice OP ❤️

JMSA · 30/08/2024 21:47

It's a bit 'try hard'.

RareCheese · 30/08/2024 21:47

minipie · 30/08/2024 21:03

Don’t expect anyone to use the umlaut, ever.

This.

Surname of some great authors. I confess I struggle to see it as a first name.

Same
