I don't like the name Dustin, I just think of dustbin.
What name do you really dislike?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Ellie, Millie, Teddy and Jackie. Any other spellings of those names.
As pp has said Ellie and millie end up as elleh and milleh. Teddy is far too twee but really popular and I have never once met a nice Jackie so it's really coloured the name for me.

Nobody has ever called me "Elleh" as my name is Ellie (Ell-ee) I'm confused by your statement 😂

It is! In a novel I read when I was younger I'm sure a character said "Emma is a fat girl's name" - awful, but I can't get it out of my head.

I always think of Jane Austen's novel Emma.

She was beautiful, bright and accomplished (but a little too arrogant).

To me Emma is an elegant name but also soft.

Seems one person's elegant is another's boring.

I think Emma will make a big comeback along with Jane and Anne. (A Brontë inspired revival!)

Simple elegance as a palate cleanser from all the cute frilliness.

Wow some lovely names here which noone has ever said IRL they hate - mine and my children's.
However I really dislike the name Dylan. Ugh.

Emily - slimy
Anna - boring and lacking any inspiration
Paul- boring
Emma - slimy
Jack - boring
Lucy - slimy

All very WASPy names to ensure the reader knows the likely heritage of the owner.

Well - I am a white Protestant woman Confused

Should I have called my kids Muhammed and Aisha?

elm26 · 30/08/2024 21:19

Horrible thread and really distasteful and hurtful to a lot of people.

My little girl is Tilly, I'm an Ellen nicknames Ellie. I've been mentioned in particular as a "nothing name" or all the Ellen's she's met have been "batshit crazy"

Just not nice.

I really didn't want to see my name on here.. but I've learnt that I'm both boring and slimy

Literally - I'm fine with people saying they don't like my name, but no need for them to go in and be bitchy! Some comments are unnecessary

Gardennotebook · 30/08/2024 21:14

Barry.

Gardennotebook · 30/08/2024 21:14

@IneedsomeSleeppleasenow I think Emma is lovely.

jonesybonesy · 30/08/2024 21:13

Romi/Romy I have no idea why it's so popular on Mumsnet

Some random on the internet using those adjectives to describe their opinion of a name does not make you those things. It's just someone opinion!!

Gardennotebook · 30/08/2024 21:13

Terry. Derek. Tommo.

Mingus (makes me think minge)
Mungo (makes me think mung beans)
Fergus (makes me think fungus)
Clive (sounds smarmy to me)
Maude (makes me think maudlin)
Mildred (makes me think mildew)
Ethel (didn't like Ethel Hallow in The Worst Witch)
Ottilie (makes me think otter)
Ptolemy (twat)
Clementine (makes me think phlegm)

There are plenty of names that are perfectly lovely but I just wouldn't use them, doesn't mean I hate them though. The ones above though... I just can't get past what I think of when I hear them.

You know I never liked Ethel (grandma's name) but I discovered yesterday the first ever female ruler of Britain in her own right was called Æthelflæd, which would later become Ethel. So it's been around since like 900AD or something. Still wouldn't use it for a child but it made me have a whole new level of respect for the name!!

I was doing some admin for a creche recantly came across the name Dusty. Don't know if its a boy or a girl but why, just why?

Music fans maybe? Someone I met recently has a Dolly and Dusty, they're expecting a 3rd and considering Doris or Elton. I suggested David to match their D trend. Each to their own!!!
