Oakley for a girl?

verityrosa · 25/08/2024 21:13

I’ve just found the baby name board and I’m new here. 💜
can I ask people’s opinions of the name Oakley for a girl please? And reasons for disliking it, if you do!
Does it go with sisters Scarlett and Bella?

thank you 💕

I like Romy - no negative associations that I’m aware of. Willow is a good name too. I can’t deal with the Fleur/bleurgh thing personally and, to me, Oakley is a brand (sunglasses and hoodies).

I can’t believe I hadn’t even thought of the brand, until this post! It was my husband’s suggestion, which was a bit surprising because he usually suggests names like Rebecca, Georgina, Harriet (which aren’t really names that I like, with the exception of Harriet as I quite like Hattie)

I like all your other suggestions, especially Faith, Fleur and Iris. Romy is fine . But Oakley is horrible. There's a "celebrity" dachshund called Oakley and I even dislike it for him.

Fleur has been on my list since my first girl, 11 years ago. It’s likely to be the name I will wish I would have used but just wasn’t brave enough to use it. 😭

I chose a name I absolutely love that people either love or hate when they hear. Some people visibly turn their nose up at it but I still absolutely love it and it really suits her personality. Go with what you love.

Oakley - reminds me of furniture
Romy - really like it
Willow - was a hugely popular dogs name a few years back around me but has become popular for children in the last 2 years. I'm not a fan
Fleur - absolutely adore!
Faith - I like it but prefer Romy or Fleur

Sorry don't like Oakley but love all these...especially Willow.

You might like Faye too

Faye / Fay is the middle name 😅 or Iris (or both) definitely not with Faith, which would just be Faith Iris

With the name Romy, can anyone think of possible teasing? Any negative associations? Do you know any?

@verityrosa It’s your accent and area that matters. Willow is over used. Oakley? Trees again? I thought of Annie Oakley - but I’m old. Fleur Iris or Romy Iris sound good to me.

Uriahsnose · 25/08/2024 21:32

Annie Oakley was great so it is a yes from me

shoopshoopdedoo · 25/08/2024 21:30

I really don’t like Oakley at all.

Romy is lovely! Willow is OK.

The connotations of Faith would make it unusable to me, but it’s a nice sound. Fleur should be nice but it sounds awful in my accent - like “bleurgh”.

Moveoverdarlin · 25/08/2024 21:18

Oakley is really chavvy in my opinion. Fleur is lovely.

Fleur is one of my favourite ever names, but I think it could possibly sound really awful with some accents. I love it written down and get a happy feel from it though 💜

Romy Fay is lovely . All the other names on your list are better than Oakley .

Lifelover16 · 25/08/2024 21:22

I love your top four choices and think they go together well with her siblings. I’m sorry but like other posters, Oakley makes me think of either sunglasses or an ancient tree.

Oh I didn't know that. I only know two, Aged 3 and 5.

I think it’s in the top 5 UK baby girl names now. I know of one Willow, who would be about 17 now - very unusual when she was born!

OP posts:
verityrosa · 25/08/2024 21:20

Oh and middle name would be Iris or Fay (the only family names that are special enough to use )

Every second girl toddler is called Willow, though.

Holidayhell22 · 25/08/2024 21:19

I’ve only ever heard it for a boy. I don’t know why it couldn’t be used as a girls name though.
It is unisex I suppose.

abracadabra1980 · 25/08/2024 21:19

Sunglasses. And trying to hard to be 'different'.

I love Romy and Faith.

I've known yet Oakleys, both boys.

It does sound more like a boy's name doesn't it?
