Uncommon boys names - shortlist?!

deliwoman1 · 23/08/2024 15:45

We’ve got a shortlist of sorts! But we’re still struggling with falling in love with a name. It was so easy with DD, so it’s getting me down a bit! 🥺

Hoping this thread will help us finally fall for one of them!

Need something short to go with our surnames and uncommon, to go with sis named Vada. What’s your favourite/least favourite? Any other suggestions in a similar vein?

Cato
Iven (softer spelling, can’t get past Russian feel of Ivan)
Levin
Amos
Eden
Linus
Asa (sounds too much like Vada?)

Middle name James or August (for my late Dad). Neither works for us as a first name. 🫠

I used to work with an Asa from Canada, lovely lad.

GreenMarigold · 23/08/2024 23:31

Amos is the only one I like from your list and I love it! Really nice solid name.

lazzapazza · 23/08/2024 23:24

Nah.

How about Clive?

ButtonMoonBlanketSky · 23/08/2024 22:29

Jago August
Grayson James
Chase August
Griffin James
Emmett James
Cole August

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/08/2024 21:42

Although I adore alliterative names and have always thought Bram was a great name so I’d be very tempted by that.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 23/08/2024 21:40

Asa is stunning and I don’t thinks its too close to Vada.

Something short and uncommon? Heath, Ivo, Zev, Orin, Leal ?

ZiggyZowie · 23/08/2024 21:29

Leon

Orson

Carl

Damon

Ethan

Jude

Isaac

Calliopespa · 23/08/2024 21:29

I don’t really think Iven is any softer than Ivan but I do think Ivo achieves this? I also think it’s actually a much nicer name.

Linus always makes me think of sinus - which isn’t helped by the Peanuts character who looked like he was dragging round a filthy snot rag😂.

I think Ivo James or Ivo August sound really nice.

Chewbecca · 23/08/2024 21:23

Amos is the only one I like.

Whitewolf2 · 23/08/2024 21:22

Amos or Asa are my faves.
What about Otto?

Vabenejulio · 23/08/2024 21:16

It’s an odd list. Part Scandinavian, part very Jewish, part cartoon characters ….. and then you have James and August.

Are you Scandi or Jewish or deeply into your cartoons? If not, they’re all odd. Eden is the only one I’d say a definitive no to, it’s a girl’s name.

pimmpomm · 23/08/2024 21:02

I like Amos and Asa (I have one) from your list op.

Cato - like Kato Kaelin, OJ Simpson’s lodger?
Iven (softer spelling, can’t get past Russian feel of Ivan) - everyone will misspell it and he’ll spend a lifetime correcting them. I do like Ivan, though.
Levin - meh
Amos - meh
Eden - Will people see the name written and assume he’s a girl?
Linus - wimpy kid from Charlie Brown
Asa (sounds too much like Vada?) - I don’t know how to pronounce this. Asha? Asia? He’ll spend a lifetime correcting people.

Ivan is the best option IMO.

My son is Asa. We, and he, have never had to correct anyone. It's pronounced Ace-er. Like the tree.

They’re nearly all pretty awful.

Cato? Pink Panther’s arch-enemy.

Eden is a chavvy girls’ name.

Linus was the drip in Peanuts with the security blanket.

I like Amos.

Grin @LoneHydrangea

KirstenBlest · 23/08/2024 20:49

Cato - OK but will shorten to Cate
Iven - He'll be "Ivan with an e" all his life
Levin - Surname
Amos - fine (makes me think of The Woolpack)
Eden - tends to be used more for girls
Linus - gets said as Lie-nus in the UK
Asa (sounds too much like Vada?) - how do you say Vada - like Darth Vader?

I like Linus. How about Ivor?

Why not swap the order of the surnames if Bram B* is a problem?

We already have a daughter with that order and would like them to have the same surname really. Plus the other surname sounds like a boys given name so we put it last to avoid it seeming like a middle name if we did have a boy one day. Glad we thought of that!

Levin is quite nice but the others are terrible.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/08/2024 17:33

What about the Welsh name Ifan (pronounced as Ee-van)?

SingingSands · 23/08/2024 17:29

How about Eben? Pronounced eh-ben (not ee-ben)

Vada and Eben?

mugglewump · 23/08/2024 17:27

Linus makes me think of the Charlie Brown and Snoopy character, but that won't mean anything to kids nowadays. I know an Eden and he is lovely, so that makes me biased (has a brother Ellery, if you wished to know what the parents' had teamed it up with). And I am also biased towards Amos - my great grandfather's name and a middle name of my grandad, father and son!

I prefer your middle names to be honest.

James August
August James

From your list, Ivan is OK but with an 'a' not an 'e'

We pronounce it Vay-da, so a bit close to Asa pronounced A-sah.

I like Bram too but the first of our surnames begins with B so it’s a bit of a mouthful! Same problem with Bowen.

Edited

Thanks! That’s lovely. I still don’t actually think Asa is too similar if you love it, though I can see how it has the same sort of pattern to it.

I really like Cato tbh! Different but a softer sound and goes with Vada
