Middle name will be Catherine Victoria

I think Alice with Catherine Victoria. But Alys is lovely in itself. It’s just personal preference. And heritage (sometimes).

Based on previous posters Alys was the original spelling in England so you equally say why does Alice even exist.

Well it was changed to Alice and it was Alice for centuries, why go back to medieval times unless you are being eccentric?

If you ask me, Alys is weird. No idea why "Alys" even exists when its a perfectly good old school English name and there is a perfectly good traditional English spelling available. (Someone on here said Alys its Welsh - sorry if I offend any Welsh people but it doesn't sound like the OP is Welsh).

Alice

It will just be so annoying for her otherwise

KirstenBlest · 23/08/2024 19:11

@Marylou62 , I have a friend called Marc. Because Mark is so common in his age group, he isn't Marc with a c, he is always Marc Surname. He's not fussed if it gets written as Mark. His surname is unusual.

Alice is popular and has never fallen from use, so Alys would probably be as you say 'Alys with a y'.

Babies called Alice in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)

Alys is the most common spelling in Wales but not by much. OP is probably not Welsh-speaking or living in Wales. (I'm guessing from the middle names, apologies if I'm wrong)

SallyWD · 23/08/2024 19:02

Alice, unless you're Welsh then Alys.

localnotail · 23/08/2024 18:39

So, basically, if you are English, it should be Alice. If you are Welsh, Alys. Simple!

As someone who has had to spell my name every single time I deliberately gave my own DC normal/easily spelt names..
A friend told me she was going to call her DD 'Alys with a y'. I told her that would be her name! Every time you introduce her (or when she's older and telling people her name) it'll be 'Alys with a y...'

ErrolTheDragon · 23/08/2024 18:24

I think Alice with those middle names.

I do like Alys though... despite or perhaps because it seems like the default name for a witch or similar in books and films. (Just checked the spelling of the mysterious woman at Harrenhal in house of dragons...yup, Alys.Grin)

TalesTreadsTea · 23/08/2024 18:18

Alys is a very, very old Welsh name. Ignorant of people to say it's daft or clunky.

sel2223 · 23/08/2024 17:21

Alice. Without a doubt.

Alys sounds like Ali's

KirstenBlest · 23/08/2024 16:43

@TallulahBetty , both are used in Wales.

TallulahBetty · 23/08/2024 13:32

Clma · 22/08/2024 19:37

Alice! Never Alys that's daft and she'll spend her life correcting people, who'll internally be rolling their eyes!

It is not daft, it is the spelling in Wales.

Tattletail · 23/08/2024 13:28

Alice.

Alys looks clunky.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/08/2024 13:26

Thiswayorthatway · 22/08/2024 20:53

Alys?! Ffs

Perfectly legit welsh spelling

VWGal · 23/08/2024 11:45

musicalfrog · 22/08/2024 20:09

Alys is soooooooo pretentious.

Alys is the Welsh spelling. But if I lived outside of Wales I’d go with Alice.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/08/2024 11:33

I had a friend called Alys in the states and it was pronounced Al-eese. So it would get mispronounced. In fact I would not assume it was meant to sound like Alice.
I quite like Ellis though for a girl.

WaitingForMojo · 23/08/2024 11:30

7wwkw · 22/08/2024 22:12

Alice
Or she will have to correct spelling forever.

Unless she’s in Wales, In which case she’ll have to correct Alice

BoleynMemories13 · 23/08/2024 11:18

Wow, there are some very ignorant people on this thread.

Personally I prefer Alice, but Alys is a perfectly legitimate spelling. I think it depends on baby's heritage OP. Alys could be a lovely nod to that, if you're Welsh or live in Wales. Otherwise, I'd opt for Alice.

Firsttimebabymummy · 23/08/2024 07:47

Alice unless you live in Wales

Hobbesmanc · 23/08/2024 07:36

I didn't know Alys was Welsh. I always think of it as medieval. It looks pretty and it's hardly a lot of letters to spell out so I'd go with it. Loads of names have I and y versions. Lynda. Martyn etc

Pemba · 23/08/2024 07:35

They are equally nice (and pronounced the same I think), and I don't think you have to have a Welsh connection to use Alys.

However with the middle names Catherine Victoria using the standard English spellings I think it might be better to use Alice to fit in with them.

Andoutcomethewolves · 23/08/2024 07:28

I have a good friend called Alys and I think it's really pretty and looks lovely written down!

However I would personally go for Alice ad that'd the best known version - as someone with an unusual name, I do love my name but having to spell it every time gets a bit boring... as others have said, if you're based in Wales it should be no problem but otherwise definitely Alice 😊

TalesTreadsTea · 23/08/2024 07:20

Also agree Alice unless you have Welsh heritage. Culturally inappropriate otherwise, saying this as a Welsh person.

Also Alice goes with the middle names, very pretty combo.
