Thought we'd found our perfect name, but made the mistake of saying it to close family and it's gone down like a sack of shit (lesson learned!) No negative comments but just nods and then no mention and it's really put me off!

What are your thoughts on Cassandra? I'm more than aware the tragic connotations but in my opinion so many literary and mythological female names have sad endings. I think it's so pretty and love nn Cassie.

Any alternatives with similar vibes too?

I knew a Clarissa who was Cassie if you’re after alternatives.

jackstini · 14/08/2024 08:43

I think it's a lovely name and do like nn Cassie
As she grows up the Only Fools and Horses reference will become less - it's probably only over 50s now who know it

Alternatives starting Cas:

Cassiopeia
Cassia/Casia/Casiah
Cassidy
Cashona/Cashonea/Cashonya
Cassiana
Casilde
Cassarah
Cassiele/Cassiela

Sounds like a posh girl's name to me, a la Only Fools and Horses! But I do like it.

An alternative could be Cassia?

BearsBeetsBattlestarGalatica · 14/08/2024 08:41

I love it, it was on my potential list of names, but I love the connection to Only Fools and Horses! Cassandra feels 90s and retro and Cassie feels modern and cool, I love names that can be used in different ways.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 14/08/2024 08:39

It’s your baby so name her what you like.

I’m not keen on it because of nicknames and it’s not a name I’d choose. The Only Fools and Horses reference didn’t spring to mind.

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 14/08/2024 08:38

I have a friend with the name. It really suits her. She is Cass. Never Cassie.
I do love Cassie though.

SirChenjins · 14/08/2024 08:36

It’s forever Del Boy and Rodney - also sounds too much like Sandra with all those 70s/80s vibes. I’m aware that’s showing my age but it does spoil it for me.

FrenchandSaunders · 14/08/2024 08:36

Yep only fools and horses … I can hear Rodney saying it now

I just think of only fools and horses

Same, that's the first time I heard the name growing up (I'm in my 20s but watched OFAH growing up) however I always thought it was a very pretty name and therefore I would say go for it and tbh I think your family have been unkind making those comments.

Shibr · 14/08/2024 08:34

I don’t dislike it, but for me it has vibes of my parents names era. They used to like Only Fools and Horses and one of the characters on there was called it. My mum had friends called Cassie and Sandra (think the former was my godmother, but has long been forgotten!).

I've got a beautiful friend called Cassie (Cassandra) so for me it conjures up lovely, positive associations .
