Thought we'd found our perfect name, but made the mistake of saying it to close family and it's gone down like a sack of shit (lesson learned!) No negative comments but just nods and then no mention and it's really put me off!

What are your thoughts on Cassandra? I'm more than aware the tragic connotations but in my opinion so many literary and mythological female names have sad endings. I think it's so pretty and love nn Cassie.

Any alternatives with similar vibes too?

Firsttimebabymummy · 14/08/2024 11:32

I really like it. It's one of my horses name! (They all have human names)

I've never seen Only Fools and Horses above so don't make a connection there. Depending how old/new that is, it might not be relevant for very long anyway?

Regardless, I really like it and love Cassie, Sandy etc

SirChenjins · 14/08/2024 10:35

Cassandra might have been a kind and sympathetic character (the antithesis of yuppy, surely?!) but she was also mad enough to hitch her wagon to the Trotters! So many wonderful comedy moments from OFAH, it was genius.

I can't believe that some people have never watched OFAH (I'm 51) I immediately thought of it when you said the name but I wouldn't overthink it. It's a lovely name and she was a fab character. Choose what you love.
Del does it have numbers on its head?
It's not a raffle Rodney.

😂

HowIrresponsible · 14/08/2024 09:38

Its a lovely name. Just go for it.

Or how about Cassiopeia?! Just kidding

I like it. None of the associations are too off-putting IMO. The OFAH character represented success, positivity, chic, class - basically everything the Trotters aspired to but had difficulty achieving, 'with hilarious results'. She was a 'yuppy' who was portrayed as a kind and sympathetic character, not ruthless or arrogant like Loadsamoney or whatever.

Homer's Cassandra is far from an unsympathetic character too - a fearless truth teller under impossible circumstances. And Cassie is very sweet.

You’ve described Cassandra and the juxtaposition with the Trotters beautifully x

MagicianMoth · 14/08/2024 09:22

There was a beautiful, sweet Greek heritage girl called Cassandra in my primary school, I can still remember her full name, middle name and long Greek surname, because I thought she and her name were so nice! So this biases me somewhat, but I think it is a lovely name.

Oceangreyscale · 14/08/2024 09:20

I know a Cassia which is nice.

But nothing wrong with Cassandra, just use it if it's your favourite.

Cobblersorchard · 14/08/2024 09:18

Only fools thoughts here too immediately- I’m not a fan of it but if you like it then it’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with it as names go, it’s perfectly normal and no ambiguous spelling.

Cassie is lovely though and Cassia.

I don’t like the Sandra sound in Cassandra

I didn’t give a flying fig what anyone thought of DD’s name though. Just do what suits you best.

marshmallowfinder · 14/08/2024 09:11

It's nice but I much prefer Cassia. I don't like the 'sandra' bit.

Bananalanacake · 14/08/2024 09:08

Abba did a song called Cassandra.

Bananalanacake · 14/08/2024 09:08

It's my all time favourite name, Cassie

ineedtogwtoutbeforeitatoohot · 14/08/2024 09:04

And Rodney It's a little baby !!!

shoopshoopdedoo · 14/08/2024 09:04

Love it!

Your family will get over it - it may not be their first choice but she’s not their baby, plus it’s hardly a ridiculous name!

cinammonfishsticks · 14/08/2024 08:51

Thank you - I agree with all, and really don't think her peers will be aware of the OFAH reference. I'm 32 and never watched it.

When I think of all my friends' and family's baby name choices, there are very few I actively like and love, but they love them so would never comment or react negatively. So do I just need to get over their reaction and go with it?

Yes, I would say so.
I'm not even going to tell family our choices this time round as I know nothing will please everyone and I found all the opinions mental last time.

It's not like it's a totally bizarre, made up name that will see her getting bullied at school. It's a lovely, classic name which will be to some people's taste but not others. That's the same with most names.

If you and your partner love it then that's perfect.

Magiccarpetforsale · 14/08/2024 08:59

Love Cassandra, great name, definitely go for it. I like lots of mythology names, Artemis, Athena etc.

Also just turned 30 and never watched OFAH. Can’t imagine her peer group is going to be familiar with it!

Totally - and I agree with a pp that they are the ones who need to get over it! Classical names are beautiful and timeless, and are having a long overdue revival.

@cinammonfishsticks

"I agree with all, and really don't think her peers will be aware of the OFAH reference. I'm 32 and never watched it."

I'm younger than you and did watch it but it doesn't matter even if children do recognise is totally agree with what a previous poster said about how OFAH presented the character in a good way so it's no bad thing. It's a great name.

Brexile · 14/08/2024 08:54

@jackstini very true. OFAH is boomer humour - nothing wrong with that (generally speaking) but it speaks to the preoccupations of that generation. I liked it as a kid (am 47 now) but was aware that it was my DF's "thing" and the Trotters reflected the world he grew up in. My DC (aged 23 and under) have almost certainly never heard of it and wouldn't understand the humour at all. I think you could say the same about most sitcoms of the era - some of them were very good, but the humour is all quite specific to a certain generation/class/region to have any kind of evergreen universal appeal.

Pipecleanerrevival · 14/08/2024 08:53

You don’t need to get over it - they do! My family didn’t like my baby name but once they met the baby they got to like his name :)
Cassie is lovely. Don’t change it.

Alwaystired23 · 14/08/2024 08:52

I'd go for Cassie.

I love Cassie, Cassandra is ok but sounds a little pretentious to my ear, especially when said by Rodney. Did you say to your relatives you'd be shortening it to Cassie? They might go for it more then.

I just think of only fools and horses

Apart from the mythological connotations, yes, I think of Only Fools and Horses too.

It is a beautiful name, though.
