Or just go for one that all countries can pronounce, even if not traditional! E.g. Alia, Katya, Maya

Our daughter is called Alethea - we love it! It's in our family history and works in all 3 as far as I know :)

It means 'truth' :)

Or Lara? Or Melinda? Or Alma (Soul)?

Meredusoleil · 13/08/2024 17:31

I love Athena.

Or how about Serafina? Or Zarina? Or Luna (Moon)? Or Mariposa (Butterfly)?

Laura, making a come back. I know it is pronounced Low (to rhyme with cow) ra in Spain which is nice. Don't know about Greece.

It works in Greece too, but then it will be pronounced as La-u-ra

Selèna? Selini was the Greek goddess of the moon and I think it's a common name in Spain.

Penelope is a name from Greek mythology. And Penelope Cruz is a world famous Spanish actress. So the name should work across these cultures.

But be warned that many people in the UK seem to think that Penelope is pronounced "Penny-Lope" (I know, you might not believe it but it's true! They might know the name when they hear it, but don't recognise it when written down!) And that the shortened version, Penny, can be misheard in Spain as Pene -- which means penis.

You have now been warned!

WiganPie · 12/08/2024 21:26

Zoe, Cristina, Penelope

User776 · 12/08/2024 21:16

Maria. Works in every language and always has a certain level of popularity so isn't dated.

WiganPie · 12/08/2024 20:38

Andrea will be And-reh-a in Spain and Greece.
Diana will be Dee-anna in Spain. In Greek, the spelling is different to their version of Diana.

Eleni will get El-ain-i in the UK.

Susanna is pretty and would work.

Tir3edAndTested · 12/08/2024 20:29

Rosa

JobbyNeuf · 12/08/2024 20:28

I don't know about Greek. Girls' names with the same spelling and more or less similar pronunciation in English and Spanish:
Alba
Alexa
Andrea
Carla
Diana
Elsa
Maria
Marta
Natalia

Lucia and Paula - pronunciation differs
Sofia if spelled with F but personally I wouldn't wish on a child to have their name misspelled frequently or to have to spell it all the time for people

Carmen, Gloria and Inés - not very popular in UK, though

hellodolly1 · 12/08/2024 20:27

Love Elena
Aniqa
Isabel
Helena

Spanishgreekenglishfamily · 12/08/2024 20:25

@SerenityNowInsanityLater Serafina is beautiful.
@MirandaBlu Not really a fan of any of those. All a bit long, prefer shorter names.
@PurpleBrocadePeacock like Sofia but it's very popular. Elena I'm not keen on pronunciation. Anna is very plain. Cannot use Maia due to surname and not able to use Sara or Maria. The others are too long, prefer shorter names. Although Eva is very pretty but read it's pronounced like Ava in Greece and Spain?
@camellia15 I like Sofia, Lucia and Thalia.

Any others?
