Baby boy due in September and my OH likes this name. How would you pronounce it? With a hard T or a soft th? And which spelling? What do you all think of the name? Many thanks!

Anthony, hard t.

Antony looks as though something is missing, oh, it is!

PurpleChrayn · 08/08/2024 18:49

Neither! It isn't 1978.

WiganPie · 08/08/2024 18:45

Antonine Plague. I'd avoid that one.

Abigail47 · 08/08/2024 18:42

I just heard a female version of this that I liked.

Antonine

Relative in Australia is Anthony pronounced hard T.

I would spell it Antony - to cease deliberaion on the pronunciation and spelling.

Then they'll always have say "without an h". Antony Blinken doesn't have an h and I've even seen his name misspelled on captions.

DH is an Anthony. Definitely hard T

deeahgwitch · 08/08/2024 11:06

"Or Anto !"

True 😂 @Abigail47

NewName24 · 07/08/2024 22:45

Anthony is the spelling.

Pronunciation is the hard 't', like at the start of Thomas.

WiganPie · 07/08/2024 22:41

I've only heard the Anth version twice and I know a lot of Anthonys.

MerryMarys · 07/08/2024 22:31

I've only heard it pronounced AnTHony, like Anthea or Anthropology.

ThatsThatMeEspresso · 07/08/2024 21:08

Thank you all! We're in southern England and both English. My OH said with a hard T which I'm quite happy with but I wasn't sure on what was the typical spelling. I am happy to go with the majority rule!

I grew up in the south. Lots of Anthony’s at school always with the T sound. Moved north and suddenly they are all Anthony’s with a TH. it really irritates me!
So I would choose depending on where you live and how it’s pronounced.

MapleTreeValley · 07/08/2024 20:41

Anthony, pronounced with a hard T.

WiganPie · 07/08/2024 20:40

My XP is an Anthony and from the NE. It's said as Ant not Anth.

drspouse · 07/08/2024 20:36

Soft TH is American.

I live in the north east and it's pronounced Anthony as in the th is pronounced here.

I agree. Many in the north east would pronounce it with a 'th' sound.

WiganPie · 07/08/2024 20:32

I like it but it'll get shortened to Ant. Tony is fine but I'm not keen on Ant.

Said in a real Dublin accent Anthony becomes Anknee Smile

Or Anto!

WiganPie · 07/08/2024 20:18

Anthony. Th said as T, like in Thomas.

Anthony in the north is pronounced th not hard t. How do you want it pronounced -spell it that way?

Not where I am from in the north. Written Anthony, pronounced Antony

That’s not standard in the NE, IME.

theduchessofspork · 07/08/2024 19:17

Anthony

It’s always pronounced Antony in the UK, but the one I know without the H spends his life correcting it.

I also know a Nicolas (French) who lives here and has the same problem.
