They are basically the same name. However that isn't an issue in every family- what do you think your cousin would say?

Similar short names you might consider might be Nico, Ivo, Mike, Lucian,

MadameMassiveSalad · 14/08/2024 10:04

Yes

Prismsandprunes · 14/08/2024 09:54

I have three cousins called David. It was never a problem.

CocoPlum · 14/08/2024 09:52

My cousin named her DS the same as mine. They are several years apart and we've seen them maybe 3 times in the last 10 years. If you're very close amd see them often, maybe rethink, but i think it's fine.

PiggieWig · 14/08/2024 09:49

How close are you to your cousin? If you’re questioning it here, speak to her about it.

Lucas is Spanish, Luca is Italian, same name.

MagicianMoth · 14/08/2024 09:46

Absolutely fine for cousin's son! Siblings obviously not, children of siblings (ie children who are cousins) I would think twice but not necessarily rule it out if I loved it, my own cousins children I would have no regard for whatsoever, I would call my children the same name if I wanted - they are so rarely going to see each other.
My DH has a ridiculous number of cousins, both his parents had six to nine siblings and each of them had around three children. I have no idea what his cousins are all called let alone their children and I am sure there are a lot of duplicates.

I have written the word cousins so many times it just looks weird to me as a word now.

sel2223 · 14/08/2024 09:35

Yes they are similar but that doesn't necessarily make it a 'no'

In our family with have a Sophie and a Sofia, a Helen and a Helena. We have several kids with the same middle names as they're family names

Fandabbydaisy · 11/08/2024 08:23

I think it depends if you see them all the time maybe? I didn’t go with my favourite girl name because of a cousin with similar. Now we hardly see them anyway!

Edenmum2 · 08/08/2024 21:45

PurpleChrayn · 08/08/2024 14:55

Too similar. Both yucky, pukey names.

?!!! Are you 5?

PurpleChrayn · 08/08/2024 14:55

Too similar. Both yucky, pukey names.

Sunshineonararainydayyy · 08/08/2024 14:49

It depends how often you see each other, if nect to never then fine.

How about Rufus or Lewis as alternatives?

MsNeis · 08/08/2024 14:46

It's the same name in two different languages... I think it's too similar 🙏

purplecorkheart · 08/08/2024 14:41

Very similar but fine for cousins.

Tikk · 08/08/2024 14:38

Yes I'd rather go for a more original one if one that similar was already in the family.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 08/08/2024 14:36

It's a variation of the same exact name.

kfellover · 08/08/2024 14:33

Very similar but I think it’s fine for cousins

Waterboatlass · 08/08/2024 14:32

Very similar but fine for cousins

MavisPennies · 07/08/2024 17:44

They are very similar but I don't think it's a problem. I have two cousin John's, two uncle John's, two aunty Marys a grandma Mary, two cousin Catherines - very unimaginative naming in our massive catholic family 😂

merryhouse · 07/08/2024 17:40

short answer - yes.

slightly longer answer - if you would avoid giving him an identical name, this is too similar to use. It really depends how much you're going to be seeing them. I have a cousin with a name the same as mine and it never bothered me (she was older and the other side of the world by the time I was born).

Sockmate123 · 07/08/2024 00:48

Yes too similar

theduchessofspork · 07/08/2024 00:34

Well it’s two variations on the same name.. I don’t think that’s really an issue for cousins though??

MadridMadridMadrid · 06/08/2024 23:38

If the OP's cousin is her first cousin, the children will be second cousins. At the time my first DC was born, my first cousins had between them produced a total of four children. In those circumstances it would have felt odd to me to pick a name that was the same. or very similar to, a name that any of my cousins had picked for their children. I can see it's a very different situation if your children are going to have so many second cousins that it's hard to remember all their names!

Turophilic · 06/08/2024 23:25

They will be second cousins once removed, I think that’s remote enough for similar names.

MadridMadridMadrid · 06/08/2024 23:22

If you are close to your cousin and see a lot of him/her, I think it's a bit odd to choose a name that's quite so similar. Ditto if your family is relatively small and it's therefore easy to avoid duplicate or very similar names.
