Hi!
Half Danish boy due soon!

We've narrowed it down to
Bjorn
Fjord
or
Rune

Please state your order of preference!
Feel free to be ruthless about any of them!

And any alternatives if you have any suggestions! :-) thanks!

If you aren't Danish Søren is basically unpronounceable.

The ø sound is a real killer.

SanctuaryCity · 09/08/2024 19:56

I assume the danish parent doesn’t have much connection to Denmark based on your proposed names.

Have a look at this list and pick one of these.

Definitely no to Fjord and Rune. I like Bjorn.

My thoughts exactly

I love the name Soren

Love it too. Seems like its been overused now. And it's pronounced Sern apparently!

There’s a Scandinavian (Norwegian I think?) series on Netflix called Ragnarok and one of the characters is called Fjor - not sure if it’s a real name or made up for the series. I quite like it but not sure if it would be easy to pronounce, definitely not pronounced the same way the British typically say “fjord”.

I love the name Soren

Well, Soren is not a Danish name. You probably meant Søren (or Sören in Swedish). You can't just change letters in people's names. ø and ö aren't just "a different kind of o".

One e away from a fruit loaf. I wouldn’t.

None honestly

I know Rune gets used there but here it sounds like a weird Viking tribute . Fjord is v odd as a name. Bjorn sounds very old fashioned / an abba tribute

How about Magnus, Alexander, Caspar, Carl, maybe Torben if you want something more unusual here.

Sadly, I think you've put it really well here!
Suspicions confirmed! Just wanted something which was obviously Scandinavian.
Alas, back to the drawing board!

Ok but you need the correct letter to make it Scandinavian. They don’t exist on a British keyboard.

They are Dutch

(I am Norwegian)

Why would you want to give your baby a name you can’t pronounce or spell properly?

Fjord isn’t a name. The D is actually silent, so it Fjor.
Bjorn also isn’t a name as you don’t have the correct letters on your keyboard to spell it properly.
If you call him Rune, the R is rolling as someone else has said and I have never heard a British person able to do that (have tried to teach my DH)

We live in the U.K. and have opted for names which work well in both UK and at home.
It’s nice not to have to repeat and spell your name 100 times to people.

This. Choose one of the many lovely boys names that work in English and Danish.

Rockmehardplace · 05/08/2024 18:23

Rune by a country mile.

Bjorn
Fjord

Is Fjord really a name, I wouldn't have thought so? Are you spelling Bjørn the Danish way? If not, it changes the pronunciation so then it's not straightforward in either language - as someone with that type of name, I would really go with something that people can spell correctly in one of his two cultures.

Yes. In Denmark it's a name. 79 males are called Fjord .

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 05/08/2024 18:20

Bjorn is a boy's name. It's not one of my favourites but there's nothing wrong with it.
Fjord is an inanimate object/geographical feature. It's like calling a baby Bay or Inlet.
I'm almost sure Rune is a girl's name somewhere (Finland? Iceland?) so that might be something to consider if you're naming a boy.

AnnaMagnani · 05/08/2024 08:29

Agree re: the mad Scandi names thread.

Surely anyone of actual baby-making age with recent Danish heritage knows that Danes are busy calling their kids Emma and William.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/08/2024 08:12

If Fjord is actually used as a name (like River, Lake, Brook, Rio..) then that's my favourite.

If Fjord is just a word, then Rune.

Bjorn immediately puts me in mind of ABBA.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 05/08/2024 05:25

Omg what is it with all the threads about ridiculous Danish names recently?

I know one Bjørn. He's an awful racist old man and I've no idea why his wife isn't divorcing him. I don't know a single Bjorn because there are only 22 in population of 6 million.

There are 79 men/boys called Fjord. I've never met one, it sounds made up.

Rune is your only sensible suggestion. There are more than 6000.

Here are names by popularity and most popular for newborns.

I prefer Bjørn out of them. Slightly biased as I knew a Bjørn growing up and he was a big Teddy bear of a man.
I agree that Rune, while lovely, is hard for British folk to pronounce.
