What's your favorite nickname for Elizabeth?

Beth, Eliza, Bess or possibly Libby are all lovely.

Ahem, pedant alert, it's actually a diminutive, not a nickname, as it comes from shortening the actual name. A nickname could be anything, like, I don't know, 'Freckles', or 'Bunny'.

Probably Libby or Beth. Elsie is sweet. Lizzie is ok, but perhaps feels a bit dated now. I know Lily is apparently a shortening of Elizabeth, but personally I see this as a completely different name.

I love Eliza but also see this as a totally different name, due to the stress on the "eye" sound which is different to how it's said in Elizabeth (a short "ih" sound). I understand the similar origins but I wouldn't naturally shorten Elizabeth to Eliza.

I agree with all of this.

With a name like Elizabeth the parents don't really get to choose. My sister is Elizabeth and always introduces herself as Elizabeth and yet literally within seconds people she has never met before are calling her Liz as though they simply did not hear what she said. She finds it intensely irritating (although she realises most people are simply trying to be friendly). Just resign yourself to the fact that you can call her what you like at home but you can't control what she is called by others.
My own DD has a name that doesn't have an obvious shortened form but her school friends managed to come up with one and that is what a lot of people now call her. I absolutely hate it but I just have to grit my teeth and smile.
I really don't get this current obsession with parents choosing a "nickname" (by which people usually seem to mean a diminutive or shortened form). Nicknames develop naturally - they can't be imposed by parents outside the home.

I'm an Elizabeth and I'm known as Lizzie. To me Lizzie sounds friendly (I can't bear Liz for some reason). Though lots of people have told me that Lizzie "sounds silly" and refused to use it!

My mum and sister have called me Lizbeth and Elspeth and I had a boyfriend who insisted on Beth which was a bit weird and didn't seem like my name at all.

My daughter has Elizabeth May as middle names and one of her nicknames is Betty May, my husband started it, not sure why.

I like the full name but being called it makes me feel like I'm being told off at school or attending a medical appointment!

I love Lizzie and I think it suits a teen. My DD middle name is Elizabeth and I call her Lizzie sometimes. I also like Eliza.

Going to be a pendant here too, my dd has a name which like Elizabeth has a few diminutives, but she had a few ' nicknames ' over the years i.e. pumpkin being one - which was more a term of endearment.

but why name a child one thing and actually want a diminutive for the name - just name the child Liz or whatever.

p.a. Elizabeth would have been the name of my 2nd daughter if I had one.

bughunter · 02/08/2024 11:32

Beth, Betsy, Bess and Betty are my favs.

Elsie or Beth.

I have an Elizabeth. Didn’t like Lizzie, at all, so told people she would be Beth. This lasted approximately 10 hours until I returned home, showed her to my older children. DS called her Lizzie. She’s been Lizzie ever since. It suits her, tbh.

I did say this to a friend, who responded, “But you couldn’t have called her Beth. She takes pages to die.”

CombatBarbie · 02/08/2024 11:30

The youngest Elizabeth I know is BiBi.

I have an Elizabeth and she is known mainly as Lizzy but we also call her as nicknames Lizzybet, Lizzy-Lou and Eliza. I loved Elizabeth and had no intention to shorten it but she arrived and looked like a Lizzy and that was that.
