Yeah, the current royal family has Zara, Sienna, Savannah and Mia. Fairly big standard modern names.

Cherubs4 · 29/07/2024 11:43

However:

Walraven
Willoughby

@MidnightPatrol Queen Victoria's eldest daughter was Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa. She was known as 'Vicky' by the family.

Lakeyloo · 29/07/2024 11:35

I'm certainly not "old money" (or any money to be honest 😆) but i did grow up in an area with lots of old money families. They all had/have pretty standard "classic" names to be honest... Henry, Charles, Harriet, Emily, William, Alexander, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Arthur, Thomas, James, Sebastian. The names seem to get passed down the generations (the odd Benedict, Peregrine and Grace appearing). Genuine "old money" families seem fairly traditional.....

Several of the names on your list in the OP do not belong in this category.

Ramona - no
Estella - Estelle maybe
Lotta - as a nickname for Carlotta
Adelaide - unlikely
Seraphina - no
Pippa - only as a nickname for Philippa
Allegra - no
Emilia - more likely Amelia

Beau - unlikely
Sterling - no
Felix - unlikely
Otis - no
Wilfred - no

Exactly what I was thinking - apart from Adelaide - Queen Adelaide was the wife of William IV so probably acceptable in those circles. The Australian city was named after her. For more inspiration her full name is Adelaide Amelia Louise Theresa Caroline…

To PP who mentioned Bridgerton, great inspiration but some of the sibling names were not of the time!

I disagree. A lot of those are old money posh like OP is asking for. Felix, Wilfred, Philippa, Emilia, Allegra definitely are.

I was talking about Beau, Sterling and Ramona, as per my post.

Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter was called Adelaide.

Indeed. That's why it's just "unlikely" rather than "no". When Queen Victoria used it, it wasn't known so much as the name of a major city but was probably a family name (the city was named after a member of a european royal family and I expect the princess was too). As a name it has been demoted a few ranks in the last 100+ years

I wondered if OP was in the US? I agree you wouldn’t find anyone from the British upper class called Beau, Ramona or Sterling.

Honestly I’ve never met anyone with those names, they strike me as very blue-collar American (and nothing wrong with that, except for Beau which is awful they are perfectly nice names).

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 29/07/2024 11:09

But this thread reminded me of this snippet from a recent article, which is a prime example of "tell me your family has shitloads of money without telling me"

Sophisticated old money names
OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 29/07/2024 11:07

@Saschka you may be right.
@Aglassaday are you wanting US American or UK British? (Even within each of those countries there will be strong regional variations)

Is this for naming characters in a book or are you actually naming a baby? Understanding why you want "old money style names" would help. Generally the families in question will name their children to honour much-respected aunts and uncles, grandparents and godparents so while there will be some churn as different families mix and match, the names to suggest will depend on the family tree of the individual.

I think a lot of your shortlisted names are actually quite contemporary/trendy at present. I think there are two categories of 'posh' names - not sure which, if either, would be 'old money'.

  1. Very conventional, probably royalty inspired Ideas: Alice, Anne, Alexandra, Beatrice, Charlotte, Caroline, Diana, Elizabeth, Florence, Harriet, Henrietta, Isabel, Joanna, Jane, Katherine, Louisa, Matilda, Mary, Margaret, Rose, Rosemary, Sophia, Victoria

Albert, Arthur, Andrew, Alexander, Charles, Christopher, Edward, Frederick, George, Henry, Hal, James, John, Louis, Michael, Nicholas, Philip, Peter, Richard, Stephen, Sebastian, Victor, William

  1. fancy/frilly/horsey/a bit different Ideas: Angelica, Araminta, Arabella, Allegra, Antigone, Cassandra, Clarissa, Cordelia, Cressida, Evangeline, Felicity, Fenella, Francesca, Georgina, Gabriella, Genevieve, Hermione, Isadora, Juliette, Jocasta, Jacinta, Larissa, Lavinia, Miranda, Millicent, Madeleine, Natalia, Ophelia, Octavia, Persephone, Philippa, Penelope, Rosalie, Rosanna, Saskia, Tassita, Tabitha, Tallulah, Tamara, Thalia, Vanessa

Atticus, Barnaby, Cyrus, Crispin, Claude, Fabian, Hugh, Hugo, Leonardo, Maximilian, Montgomery, Rafferty, Ralph, Rollo, Rupert, Orson, Ptolemy, Phineas, Solomon, Theodore, Vincent, Xavier
