Incredibly dull old fashioned names!
What a shame to saddle any child with them tbh.

Or, from a different perspective, names that have stood the test of time, which are easy to pronounce and spell and have interesting historical associations. Better than being landed with a name that's fashionable now but will be dated in 30 years, or a name that's got a non-standard spelling, or a name the parents decide to pronounce in a non-standard way, all of which are going to be a burden to the child as she/he grows up.

On Pointless the other day there was a contestant called Amabel. Alexander Armstrong asked her how often she was mistakenly called Annabel. 'All the time', she said, with great feeling. Her Dad was standing beside her and apologised. Grin

Since when has Pamela and Daphne been old money. I think people might be having a laugh here tbh op!! 😂

When I was responding earlier I fleetingly thought of the Mitford sisters who were proper gentry and one of them was called Pamela. Though perhaps their names were quite "of the moment" rather than timeless (Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Thomas, Unity, Jessica and Deborah. I think the only two I would have suggested to OP are Diana and Thomas.)

No idea about Daphne.

This is intriguing but I don't agree with your list. One way to go would be to visit thepeerage.com. These are all people who are - basically - gentry and aristocracy (or 'old money'). Make your list from that. Some quick results from some research that I was doing anyway (I am quite the Excel-eer!)

Plus - Archie, which is a very popular name in schools up and down the land!

There's also an Autumn.

I was going to suggest Lysander and Ptolemy.

Your list doesn't look like 'sophisticated, old money names'

I can't think of anything more gauche than trying to ape "sophisticated old money". Lots of the names don't fit that category. Just choose a name you like and be yourself.

If you want a name that will fit in anywhere and with anyone, then choose something classic like a King's/Queen's name or a Saint's name. But one that is still used. Not Ethelred or similar.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 29/07/2024 12:49

Tilly would be Matilda, Ginny would be Virginia. Archie is likey to be Archibald.

SallyWD · 29/07/2024 12:48

I wouldn't say Beau was a sophisticated, old money name.

CurlewKate · 29/07/2024 12:48

@Aglassaday some of yours don't fit your category. Meredith, Ramona,Beau, Stirling, Cassius and Allegra leap out in particular.

Look at the royal family for inspiration.

Yeah, the current royal family has Zara, Sienna, Savannah and Mia. Fairly big standard modern names.

Plus - Archie, which is a very popular name in schools up and down the land!

honeylulu · 29/07/2024 12:40

Lotta is a diminutive so if old money it would need to be short for a "proper name".

I was going to agree, certainly not Lotta or Beau!.

honeylulu · 29/07/2024 12:35

Most old money folk tend to have timeless "classic" names which would also not cause surprise when they crop up in other classes (albeit less commonly). These are often names which feature in royal families across various generations.

So for girls:
Alexandra, Elizabeth, Catherine, Victoria, Charlotte, Eleanor, Beatrice.
Boys:
Edward, George, Henry, William, Charles, Alexander, Thomas, James.

If you want something a bit more unusual I've put some suggestions below. However the risk with those names is that they might suddenly catch a trend and become rapidly declasse. This is harder to predict than the classic names.

Girls: Antonia, Leonora, Helena, Camilla, Portia, Vanessa, Cassandra, Felicity, Rosamund, Juliet, Araminta.
Boys: Benedict, Randolph, Oswald, Peregrine, Sebastian, Fabian, Montague, Tristram, Tarquin, Hector, Julius/Julian.
