Thoughts on the name Tomi for a girl?

Awful. Unless a nn for Thomasina.

JimNast · 29/07/2024 22:03

Oh, ok. I was thinking that Sadbh would be Sadv, but only because I have seen Meadhbh and Tadhg. They might have other spellings too.

DmcinT · 29/07/2024 20:24

A few different spellings: Sadb or Sadbh or Sadhbh. I’ve known 2 girls called sadbh spelt that way so prob just most familiar with that one but I kind of like all 3 spelling so not 100% which one we’d use. Tara might be easier 😂

The Sadbh spelling looks dodgy. Isn't it Sadhbh?

DmcinT · 29/07/2024 15:23

@JimNast We’ve shortlisted Tara and Sadbh for now. I also like Nóra but OH isn’t keen

Nico can be unisex, @DmcinT , if that's the vibe you're after. Romy sounds a bit like Tomi.

DmcinT · 29/07/2024 14:44

I feel like I’m completely gone off it now 😂 I know there’s loads of lovely girl names but just thought Tomi was maybe a cute alternative. We already have a boy and it’s not that I’d use that name for a boy, just thought it could be nice for a girl but as I say I think it’s a no now. Thanks for everyone’s help

Why would you?

I also know a Tomi, Nigerian female, short for Oluwatomi iirc.

Yes me too! A wee girl in my son's football class.

JimNast · 29/07/2024 12:14

Tamara is lovely

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/07/2024 10:48

Not keen personally. Tamara nn Tammy is nice?

I think we need some more info about you and why you like this name OP. And the pronunciation. As clearly, looking at these comments already, there's some ignorance around people from other countries and cultures who choose non English names.

It's well known in Japan, Finland and Nigeria.
I like it.

Its well known in Finland for sure, but for boys.

Gcsunnyside23 · 29/07/2024 10:01

How is it supposed to be pronounced? I didn't read as Tommy but toe-me (as is Toni) then realised you might mean Tommy.

CurlewKate · 29/07/2024 09:58

So long as you have a boy called Chloe....

TheShiningCarpet · 29/07/2024 09:57

Just because one doesn’t like a name it doesn’t mean one is ignorant

context is everything

loropianalover · 29/07/2024 09:49

She’ll always be called Toni which is horrible.

Maelil01 · 29/07/2024 09:49

It looks like you can’t spell and you’ve named your child after a toy manufacturer.

iwasashowgirl · 29/07/2024 09:48

Def not.

I always wonder if girls given what are in reality boys’ names feel like they disappointed their parents by being a girl!

JimNast · 29/07/2024 09:38

Is it Toe-mi or Tommi? Tamsin and Thomasina are nice. Tammy is better than Tommi for a girl.

TheShiningCarpet · 29/07/2024 08:43

Awful

Bbq1 · 29/07/2024 08:42

She'll spend her life saying, "No, it's Tomi not Toni".

Toasticles · 29/07/2024 08:05

As a nick name for Thomasina.

Gamergirl86 · 29/07/2024 07:10

I like the name Thomasina for a girl, with the nickname Tommy. She'll grow into whatever name you give her.

Charlotte's have been called Charlie for years and years I don't see why other traditional boys names shouldn't be used for girls too.

I think Tomi is cute.
