I recently heard of baby name Albert I fallen in love with it I like old traditional names, unfortunately husband really doesn't seem to love it like I do which makes me sad I was discussing with my DM earlier and she loves it too but she has said to me that I can't use it if my DH doesn't like it as much as me.

Has anyone had this and do you get over this feeling even with a compromise name instead. I wonder see the name Albert I'm going to feel sad.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
TartanJambo · 26/07/2024 21:15

I absolutely loved Nicholas nn Nico. DH did not like it one bit. We have two DS so I had two chances but both times he just couldn't get used to it.
It was important to me that DH also loved our boys' names (or at least didn't dislike it) as they are his children too. We have two " compromise" names and even though I still love the name Nicholas / Nico, I can't imagine my children being anything else now than the names we've called them :)

thegrumpyone · 26/07/2024 20:54

Albi?

MrsALambert · 26/07/2024 20:50

We have an Albert (and an Arthur) and some of the other names on our list were
Edward
Charles
Daniel
William
George
Fergus
I think you both have to agree, even if it’s just a top 5 you are both happy with and you can decide when you meet him

Catsinpartyhats · 26/07/2024 20:46

I got final say with our DC's name. Obviously I wouldn't have chosen something he hated, but when you can't find a name you both love, something has to give. I carried the baby for 9 months, it was his surname (our married name) so I got final say for first name.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 26/07/2024 20:44

OP - does your DH hate Albert or is it just not his favourite? Where does he stand on nicknames like Albie or Bertie?

Other old man names starting with A - Ambrose, Archibald, Andrew, Alistair, Adam.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 26/07/2024 20:40

@Bigearringsbigsmile - what makes a good name then?

The old man name trend has gone on so long most of the old men who had those names have died and there’s a wave of teenagers with them. “Albert” won’t stand out as an out of generation named child. Anymore than Daisy or Maisie would (both “granny” names when I was growing up)

It’s the Baby Names section, the whole point is to give an opinion on the names!

How about Alfred? Little Alfie. Or Athelstan, or Athelbert, if we are going for Saxon names.

Yes but the OP isn't asking for opinions on the names, shes not asking if others like them or not she's asking an entirely different question and not one that requires the response that they are not good names.

Saschka · 26/07/2024 20:34

That's your opinion and given the OP clearly likes them if say your opinion was unnecessary wouldn't you?Hmm

Both of these names are extremely popular right now.

Jeez these names are awful! Albert is an old bloke with a white beard and a pipe!
Arthur is the bald bloke he drinks with in yhe pub

Both of these names are extremely popular right now.

dbeuowlxb173939 · 26/07/2024 20:15

Does he like Bert/Bertie or Albie? Maybe you could have Albert but call him a shortened version?

Muffin101 · 26/07/2024 20:09

its a shame when that happens but unfortunately that’s just how it goes with making a child! If it helps, I vetoed Freddie and my husband vetoed Lachlan, both of which we respectively LOVED, but the name our son has is beyond perfect and we’re both so glad we didn’t go for the names we initially loved.
Generally speaking, I don’t think it’s a good idea to discuss names with anyone other than the other parent. Two sets of opinions are hard enough to match up without other people chiming in!

What about Ernest, nn Ernie?

And he drove the fastest milk cart in the west

WetBandits · 26/07/2024 20:05

Alfred?

I love the ‘old man’ names, probably because I have met a lot of lovely old men through work 😂

Also very fond of Stanley, Sidney and Ernest.

My husband hated my first choice but I thought he would let me use it once the baby arrived but he didn't. With the hormones after birth etc I was devastated & spent days sobbing about it. We eventually went with a name we both agreed on & honestly I couldn't imagine my son with any other name now. My advice would be to accept in plenty of time that you won't be using the name & find some other names you both agree in.

ProfessorPeppy · 26/07/2024 19:52

All the 'old' Arthurs and Alberts are long gone, they would have died in the 1980s and 90s (like a PP said). All of the Arthurs and Alberts I know are under 20.

Arthur phenomenally popular round here, Albert actually fairly rare. I've taught zillions of Arthurs and three Alberts (and my Albert, who's a Bertie).

Sadly they both passed away twenty years ago at a ripe old age - and their grandchildren and great grandchildren are re-discovering their names!

BoleynMemories13 · 26/07/2024 19:40

That's life I'm afraid, you just have to accept it and push it to the back of your mind. That name isn't meant to be.

Arthur is much nicer imo, bert is such a harsh sound. If you both really like Arthur that could be a lovely compromise.

cupcaske123 · 26/07/2024 18:37

George is a nice solid old fashioned name.

deliwoman1 · 26/07/2024 18:34

If you can, try and use it as an opportunity to find something you both love. If he likes Arthur and you like Albert, start with traditional names beginning with A! Then names of a similar style. Make a list together and talk it through. You'll both find one you agree on eventually, or one that grows on you, especially if it's a nice thing you work on together.

I agree with PP btw that Albert is very popular. Arthur too!

Beth216 · 26/07/2024 14:45

I much prefer Arthur to Albert. Albert has some cute nn but as a full name I find it still a bit too old fashioned, Walter is the same IMO.
