Husband sadly doesn't love my fav boy name

I recently heard of baby name Albert I fallen in love with it I like old traditional names, unfortunately husband really doesn't seem to love it like I do which makes me sad I was discussing with my DM earlier and she loves it too but she has said to me that I can't use it if my DH doesn't like it as much as me.

Has anyone had this and do you get over this feeling even with a compromise name instead. I wonder see the name Albert I'm going to feel sad.

I'm biased as it was my darling dad's name so I love it 🥰

My nan called him Bertie which is lovely too. Mostly he was known as 'Al'.

I had this with baby 1's name. We had agreed on a girl's name but struggled with a boy's name and DP despised my ultimate favourite name. After seeing me go through birth, he would've let me use it had she been a boy, but I wouldn't have. It wouldn't have felt right choosing a name he didn't like. We both love our daughter's name and I still remember how excited we both were when we discovered it. Just keep trying. A name you are both enthusiastic over will come up 😃

Hold on to it. Say it again when you’ve just given birth.

I compromised on my favourite name and I regret it to this day. I always look at her and think she’d make a much better ‘favourite name’ and she’s nearly 4.

How long until baby is due?
I just went quiet in this situation for a while and then brought it back up again another time and told him all the reasons it was wonderful and he changed his mind. Now he loves it!

I liked Albert nn Albie but my H disliked 'old fashioned' names. I love that all the older style names are coming back into fashion

If it helps at all, I know many so small Alberts, Berties, Albies and even a half Italian Alberto! When you realise there are 2 in his class at nursery you might feel relief for choosing another name rather than sadness. Hopefully anyway!

Seconding this, absolutely loads of Berties at my kids’ school and nursery (one of them is mine and I didn’t want a totally original name or anything but I definitely didn’t anticipate there being 3 on each school year!)

I’ve had this over and over with my husband, we have very different taste in names and he has vetoed a lot of my favourites!

I do advise just to keep trying - another name will come along that you love. If you find one you both like let it live in your head for a while and see if you come round to loving it as much as you do Albert. It’s hard to let go of one you love but once your baby is here and named, you’ll think their name is perfect for them.

Arthur used to be shortened to Art, which is nice I think.

If he doesn’t like the -but sound you get in most English pronunciation how about pronouncing it Alberh, French style!

Does he hate it or does he just not love it?
Use it if you really love it. You are the one giving birth.
My 3rd child we used a name I loved but my husband wasn't too keen on.
Now he admits it was the right choice as she really suits the name.

All the 'old' Arthurs and Alberts are long gone, they would have died in the 1980s and 90s (like a PP said). All of the Arthurs and Alberts I know are under 20.

Arthur phenomenally popular round here, Albert actually fairly rare. I've taught zillions of Arthurs and three Alberts (and my Albert, who's a Bertie).

Nonsense.
I work in the NHS and meet lots of Albert's in their 80s and 90s.

I honestly don't mean this nastily but for me if he doesn't like it then you can't choose it. End of.

By all means feel sad about it for a few days. But then put it aside and move on. Both parents need to like the name.

I know it's different as they aren't my children, but what I would say is that I have friends and family who have chosen names that I really don't like, but as the children grow into proper little people they become synonymous with the name and it becomes irrelevant because that's them and you love them (if that makes sense). Sorry that doesn't mean he has to choose Albert though!

Could you consider similar Alfred instead? Albert makes me think of Prince Albert (and the piercing!) sadly. Whereas when I hear Alfred I automatically think of (King) Alfred the Great, similar to Alexander the Great or William the Conqueror etc.

If you want a Bert name because you want the cute “Bertie” nn then classic Robert is much nicer than Albert imo. Robert could probably be any age but Albert is trendy so tends only to be on the very young ( or very old!) imo.

It means a good few people think they are perfectly good names.

You don't have to use a name like Arthur or Albert for your own child if they're not to your taste.

But oher people have tastes that are not the same as yours. Quite a lot of people, actually.

My NCT group had 6 couples. We are now onto second babies. 2 of those couples have had 2 boys called: Arthur and Albert. If you both like Arthur, go for it. Albert is roughly as popular as Arthur as far as I have seen.

Albert immediately reminds of Prince Albert and then the Prince Albert piercing. Just to show you that different people have different associations with a name. Your DH might have a negative association so it would be unfair to try to make him accept it .
