  1. Thoughts on both names?
  2. Which one do you prefer more?

Not keen on either of them. Neither are bad but Clementine is long and makes me think of an orange fruit. Clemmie makes me think clammy. Colette seems a bit dated.

Yes I agree with this

dranabox · 09/07/2024 23:54

I think Colette would be lovely and fresh-sounding now, though it was possibly mildly popular a few decades ago.

Clementine I love, as it was my pony's name. She was Clem-en-tyne. Though I sometimes used the French pronunciation of clay-mon-teen . I don't like the hybrid pronunciation of clem-en-teen. It sounds wrong.

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/07/2024 23:43

Clementine reminds me of oranges and I'm a bit meh about Collette.
I prefer Celeste and Carenza.

Bettedaviseyes111 · 09/07/2024 23:35

Love Clementine, I would have had it for a girl.

Collette is pretty too though.

CakeRattleandRoll · 09/07/2024 23:32

Colette. (I don't see it as dated at all.)

IamaRevenant · 09/07/2024 19:14

I'd probably go for Colette but honestly neither.

My friend is a Clementine (Clemmy) and extremely beautiful and cool. Still the name Clemmy makes me think of phlegmy and clammy. If she can't carry it off I can't imagine who could!

Colette sounds like an old lady and not in a good way.

I like Cosette as suggested by a PP. Or if we're going with the C theme what about Carla?

Jemimapinotduck · 09/07/2024 19:06

Colette

KayEmAy · 09/07/2024 18:40

I prefer Clementine

but I also like Cosette

TheCultureHusks · 09/07/2024 12:58

I don’t hate them but wouldn’t choose either. Agree that Colette sounds dated.

To me there’s something a bit naff about -ette endings.

Definitely prefer Clementine! Churchill's wife!!!!

buttnut · 09/07/2024 09:16

Really dislike both sorry! Colette sounds very dated to me and Clementine is just long, frilly and a bit try-hard to me.

TM1979 · 09/07/2024 09:12

Don’t like either sorry. Clementine is such a mouthful and Colette is old fashioned (not in a good way) and very harsh sounding.

DuchessOfSausage · 09/07/2024 09:12

I think Colette would be shortened to Col, like Colin is. it wouldn't cross my mind to 'shorten' it to Lettie, Ettie or Etta. They are just as long in terms of syllables.

Ifthisiswheretheworldisheadingcountmeout · 09/07/2024 09:06

I like Clementine but Clem/Clemmie sound too much like phlegm/phlegmy to me so would put me off. I prefer the shorten options for Colette, Lettie...Ettie, Etta etc.

Firsttimebabymummy · 09/07/2024 09:04

Colette

I don't like the potential nn for Clementine. Clem, Clemmmy..

Colette has much nicer nn in my opinion- Col, Ettie

DuchessOfSausage · 09/07/2024 08:48

Icanwalkintheroom · 09/07/2024 07:05

I prefer Clementine to Colette. I also like the shortenings, but do be prepared that people won’t know if it’s teen or tyne.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 09/07/2024 07:02

I think Lettie is a gorgeous nickname and you could shorten Collette to that.

user1492757084 · 09/07/2024 06:44

Colette.
Clemency I prefer to Clementine.

Do you like Cosette, Claudette or Claire?

Roselilly36 · 09/07/2024 06:36

I like both, slightly prefer Colette.

Nicebloomers · 09/07/2024 06:25

I’m a sucker for a pretty French name so I think Colette is delightful.

Clementine I don’t like the shortenings.

PowderPuffGirl · 09/07/2024 06:23

Clementine is one of my favourite names. It's gorgeous.
I didn't think I was going to have DC so I used it for a much beloved dog, rendering it unusable for my DD who arrived 6 years later. I was gutted when I realised I couldn't shortlist it.

Nn naturally evolved from Clemmie to Clem to Tiny.

Cecilly · 09/07/2024 00:04

I like Collette more

SkaneTos · 08/07/2024 23:28

Both are lovely names.

I prefer Clementine. It reminds me of an educational tv series I watched during French lessons in 7th and 8th grade. It was about a a French girl named Clementine.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/07/2024 23:09

Oh my darling, oh my darling, oh my darling Clementine
Collette, Collette! O was I dreaming when we met?

Interesting (okay, to me) that they're both featuring in songs.
