Fran (Francis) Cotton was a 1970s rugby player.

KirstenBlest · 06/07/2024 10:42

It seems popular on here but the only one I know IRL is an adult.
The registered Franks might not be many but Frank might be Franc, Francis, Franklin or Frankie on his BC. Francis is nice.

Needmorelego · 06/07/2024 10:40

@Jessieshome most Frank's traditionally would be Francis on their birth certificate so it's Fran/Franny short for Francis rather than short for Frank because Frank is already the shortened version.

@Jessieshome Fran seems to have become more of a popular boys name in recent years.
One of the members of the music group Travis is Fran - short for Francis.
I might be wrong (and apologies to Scots and Irish if I am) but I think Scottish and Irish males called Francis are often Fran or Franny.

Interesting. You're probably right in regards to Scottish Franks actually thinking about it. But to me Fran is a girl's name, either in its own right or usually short for Francesca. I don't see why Frank needs 'shortening' anyway, but it's completely up to the OP, it's her baby. Just seems weird to me 🙂

I don't know, nor have ever known any Franks of any age. (Apart from Frank Butcher on EastEnders)

I'd think it'd be pretty bonkers to give a boy called Frank the nickname Fran, that's like calling a Marcus - Mary or Robert -Rose! Not quite the same I know but Frank is already 1 syllable and Fran is a girl's name.

It’s not too popular.
Even if it’s the number 1 name the actual numbers are quite low. In, say, the ‘70s there wasn’t as big a variety/range of names in circulation as there are now, so the number 1 name had loads of babies with that name.
Nowadays there is a much broader variety of names so the number 1 name actually has relatively few babies called it.
Frank is great, it’s a classic but unusual name. I love it!

Enko · 05/07/2024 22:49

I love the name Frank don't know any children called it

Catnipcupcakes · 05/07/2024 22:43

If you like it use it, does it matter if its popular? I don’t know one under about 60.

Molly Goddard’s eldest is called Frank so make of that what you will.

Personally I couldn’t as it reminds me of the creepy TV character Frank Sidebottom, which makes me feel a bit 🤢 for some reason.

BumBumCream · 05/07/2024 22:42

Francis nn Frankie age about 13
two just Frank, age 17 and 7

one female Frankie age 8

OperationGoldenDawn · 05/07/2024 22:40

Moreteaandchocolate · 05/07/2024 22:27

I know two Frankies - one boy and one girl. A lovely name and not overused round here.

Harveyes2679 · 05/07/2024 21:47

I love the nn Fran but was unsure if it would be classed too girly

Frank was on our boy list (we had a girl). I go to quite a few baby groups and am yet to meet a Frank.

StormingNorman · 05/07/2024 21:08

Only Butcher and Bruno.

Needmorelego · 05/07/2024 21:07

I know a Francesca known as Frankie aged about 15 and another female Frankie who is probably late 50s (presumably short for Francesca or Frances).
I came across a couple of boys called Fran several years ago - they would be around 15 or so now too.
I haven't personally met a (male) Frank in real life - ever !

YouveGotAFastCar · 05/07/2024 21:05

I know one Frankie, who’s about 35.. that’s it.

HaveAWordWithYerselfWouldYa · 05/07/2024 21:02

Not a thread title I EVER thought I would see

JMSA · 05/07/2024 21:01

It should never be popular Grin

SkippysEar · 05/07/2024 21:00

Frank and Beans?

What TV prog/film was baby Frank off?

Firsttimebabymummy · 05/07/2024 20:43

One in his 60's

Minesnotahighhorse · 05/07/2024 20:02

I have a Frank! He's 7.

ImPunbelievable · 05/07/2024 20:02

It's not even in the top 100, you'll be fine

TheChosenTwo · 05/07/2024 19:56

Too popular for what? Presumably there will only be one Frank in your house.
I know 2, like the name.
I also know of a dog called Frank!

Anonym00se · 05/07/2024 19:55

Two. One is our cat, and the other is my dead Grandad.
