We LOVE the name Lovey for a little girl, but obviously for more professional circumstances/later life it wouldn't be appropriate. Any ideas for what Lovey could be a nickname for?

Just call her lovey if you feel like it. Her real name doesn't have to be related. You wouldn't ask for a name that sounds like darling because you planned to use that as a nickname! Also nicknames evolve. Deciding you're going to call an unborn child lovey is weird. Wait til she's here!

Has to be Loveday. In fact, go the whole way. Loveday Minette.

BreatheAndFocus · 01/07/2024 17:27

Loveday is the only name I could think of. It’s an old English name. I suppose you could use Lavinia and shorten that to Lovey, but I really don’t like Lovey. It sounds like an impersonal and false term of affection like you might use to shepherd someone out of the way (“Come on now, lovey, let’s find you a chair over here”).

Or Lorelei

Olivia?

I worked with someone we called Lovey, her full name was Luvinder which is a Sikh name.

PrincessOfPreschool · 01/07/2024 17:21

I know it's a bit of a stretch but Ophelia could be Lovey I think, and a beautiful name.

Once they go to school though they will be called by the name you tell school so you can tell them to call her Lovey but if you don't it will just be a family pet name and die out.

Loverpool. With Anfield as a middle name (nn Annie).

I used to know a doctor called Lovey. I think her full name was Loveness.
How about Lovita?

menopausalmare · 01/07/2024 17:19

I'm not calling a student Lovey. Especially if she's a stroppy madam.

Tilly22222 · 01/07/2024 17:18

Love is a great middle name, as in Jennifer Love Hewitt or Thomas Love Peacock.

Wishimaywishimight · 01/07/2024 17:17

I always imagine this person introducing themselves in a new job; "Hi, I'm Loveday". I just couldn't do that to a child.

Abouttimeforanamechange · 01/07/2024 17:15

Loveday is a very old English name.

Cornish, actually.

Just done a quick scan on FreeBMD, and the majority of Lovedays born 1837-1900 were registered in Cornwall or Devon. There are a few most years down to the 1990s, so while it's not a very common name, it's not completely out there.

But I agree with everyone else. Call the child Elizabeth or Charlotte or whatever and keep Lovey for a home nickname.

Don't do it.
