Longer name for Lovey

We LOVE the name Lovey for a little girl, but obviously for more professional circumstances/later life it wouldn't be appropriate. Any ideas for what Lovey could be a nickname for?

How about Lavinia? Olivia could also work.

RaraRachael · 03/07/2024 15:46

Lovey reminds me of my awful Yorkshire work colleague who called everybody this whilst stabbing them in the back!

What is stupid or ridiculous about Loveday? You may not like it but that doesn't make it an invalid name

Agreed and I have made similar points upthread. What’s more I actually knew a woman called Loveday who was working in a Devon based company I used to work with.

Yes, Loveday was a name in the medieval times when names where literal words, yes popular in Cornwall/Devon area but it wasn't even originally spelled like that.

Its been virtually non existent in modern naming history frankly because it sounds stupid. Just like names like Gaylord, Obedience, Fanny, Lamb etc... that have also been dropped from common usage too because of ridiculousness.

Clutching at straws to say that just because it has had historic use its makes it a good name or reflects its modern usability.

I know a Loveday, she's from Cornwall and younger than me.

The ONS site shows that it's still used, even if not common.

Please don't backwards engineer from a pet name to a real name. Give her a name for life in the world and call her Lovey 100% of the time if you want - just make sure she knows whst her official name is!

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/07/2024 08:17

Good one, @Chersfrozenface . An interesting herb too. Nobody would bat an eyelid at a Sorrel or Saffron, so why not Lovage.

OwlsDontLikeTacos · 03/07/2024 06:07

I've taught two Loveys, both of whom were travellers, so I assumed it was a legitimate name within the traveller community.

I'm surprised that some people are unaware that Loveday is a legitimate given name. I guess that's the way it goes give it half a century, and people will think names like Nevaeh and Muhammad are quintessentially British.

Despite what you may think, Loveday is a name, once popular in the south-west. Whether you like it or not is a different matter.

There are some ignorant people on this thread - yes, Loveday is a name.

My GF used to get called Lovey as a joke by his inlaws - his second name was Lovedon, a family name (with various spellings - I'm never sure which is the correct one!)

Chersfrozenface · 03/07/2024 03:51

I've thought of another possibility.

Lovage - it's a herb.

If we can have Holly, Hazel, Willow, Rose, Violet, Poppy, Daisy, Iris, Heather, Lily and especially Rosemary - and Basil for a boy - why not Lovage?

atomicginge · 03/07/2024 00:08

Lovey can be a nn for anyone.. I personally think it's not a good idea, when they grow up and get a job they'll have to change their name.

sofasofa42 · 02/07/2024 23:20

Oh Lordy just read through all the responses . Clearly this is a regional thing- Loveday is an old West Country name . It's not made up . It's certainly not used anymore, but it IS a name.

sofasofa42 · 02/07/2024 23:15

Oooh I was going to call my daughter Loveday and lovey would have been the nickname. We chickened out ( husband said there was a LIMIT) . I regret it. My daughter would have totally suited Loveday . However, we chose something along those lines and its original but old, and mentioned in this thread.
Go for Loveday ! It's so pretty

greengreyblue · 02/07/2024 22:40

Have you never watched Corrie OP? “Give us two o’them barm cakes would ye lovey.”

resm · 02/07/2024 21:57

My husband’s colleague had a Lovey who would be primary age now. It’s not short for anything, just Lovey. Her sister’s names are quite out there too.

Lola, Lara and Lucy are nice L names. Wee Lola Lovey etc could work as a cute nickname without it needing to have letters LOV.

Ariola?

MerryChristmasToYou · 02/07/2024 17:53

@erint09 love, just call her Love. It's a name.
Babies called Love in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)
or you could use Lovely Babies called Lovely in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com)

MN likes lots of nn possibilities so why not use Loveliness. Unique and could be Love, Lovey, Lovely or Nessa, or all of them. Sorted.
