I love the name flossie
It's sentimental as I was floss as a pet name as a child. (Yorkshire obviously)
I don't want to use Florence as we know many but I don't like nicknames as real names.
I know it's term of endearment for any little girl but I would love to make it more of an actual name.
I know flora is also an option but I can't help but think of cheap butter 😂

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
greengreyblue · 29/06/2024 17:53

Yeah I agree . I have a family nn because of a character from history that I was compared to . No relation to my name.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/06/2024 17:50

If you're going to use Flossie as a nickname, then surely your DD can be called quite literally anything, just known as Flossie.
I have a daughter who's always been known as something that bears absolutely no relation to her given name. It was what her brothers and sisters called her when she was born and it stuck. Fortunately she does not have to use it on formal occasions.

I don’t get the nn Flossie though. Dental floss?

StopStartStop · 29/06/2024 17:44

Flossie is a dogs name. I’ve known several Floss/Flossies and they’ve all been animals.

Was just about to say I know of several generations of collies called Flossie Grin

StopGo · 29/06/2024 17:18

My love granny was baptised and always called Flossie. I love the name.

MistyHazelFox · 29/06/2024 17:14

Wow, some of you are really rude.
Have you realized OP doesn't want to name kad Flossie? She wants to name kid with name that could shorten to Flossie. Who told you can judge nicknames at all? It's NICKNAME. She won't be using it on job. Secondly, she wanted realistic name that can be shorten to Flossie. If you can't think of any name that can be shortened to Flossie, don't post at all. You're not paid to post.

I suggest Frances nn Flossie.

Yes, it's a very common name for sheepdogs.

My son used to love this book. That's all I could think of when I heard Flossie.

Flossie is a name of an old rugby song that rhymes the name with a word for a prostitute. That is always what I think of when I hear it.

KirstenBlest · 29/06/2024 13:53

It's not cheap and it's not butter.
Love the name Flora, but I 'll throw in another nice one - Felicitas.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/06/2024 13:50

Flossie is the name for a border collie,

KirstenBlest · 29/06/2024 13:45

Just use Flossie.

CollyBobble · 29/06/2024 13:33

My sisters childhood pony was Flossie!

Flossie will be awful when she's an adult and working in a professional capacity or business environment.

Lovely nickname for a child.

Wishimaywishimight · 29/06/2024 12:41

I remember it being the name of a sheep in an episode of Blackadder!

RuthW · 29/06/2024 12:30

Florence or Flora.

I have an adult Florence. Flo to good friends, Floss to me.

Yes, I've only known it to be a dog's name, a miniature poodle that lived next door. She was a nice little dog though, the name really suited her.

PiggieWig · 29/06/2024 09:28

In the vein that my DS is William but I called him Spud till he was about 10 (he has a variety of other nicknames too)

PiggieWig · 29/06/2024 09:27

What’s your name? My guess is it isn’t something that Flossie is short for, it’s just Flossie is a popular nickname for little girls, like Missy.

You can call her anything and still use Flossie as a nickname.

Uricon2 · 29/06/2024 09:23

My late MIL was Florence known as Flossie (but only by her DH)

Flora/Florence are nice names. Give her the option of having that to use because many of us would be deeply unhappy to be saddled with that as a given name rather than just a cutesy nickname. If she grows up wanting to be a proud Flossie to the entire universe, she still can be.

Upinthenightagain · 29/06/2024 09:18

What about Phoebe? Same beginning and end sound? Fifi is also marginally better than Flossie
