Names you LOVE but would never choose...

For example:

A name associated with a famous celebrity

Something gorgeous but very obviously from a movie/book franchise

Something that sounds way too posh (or not!)

Etc.

I loved the name Merida (from the movie Brave) and was very disappointed to learn that it's not actually a real Scottish name at all! Naming your daughter after a Disney princess seems like something you may regret.

I also saw a TV show once with a character called Persephone, Percy for short. I love it but we are in no way posh enough to pull it off. Sigh.

What are yours?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Pandora - love it and think Pandy is a super cute nickname but no.

Lancelot - so grand and handsome but no.

I've always always thought Camelot would make a lovely name but again no

And noticing a theme Merlin

AdultHumanFemale · 19/06/2024 20:26

Oh. It's like that.

Lana is beautiful! Why on earth would you ever read a name/word backwards?

I know a lovely Lana and have never thought of anaL Confused

Classic primary school playtime activity. I love my name backwards 😄

UnpackingBooksFromBoxes · 19/06/2024 20:20

Titus (from Gormenghast) or Kelly (after Kelly Jones of Stereophonics) for boys.
Dorcas (7 brides for 7 brothers) for a girl.

All were vetoed by my husband.

Redberies · 19/06/2024 20:16

I'd only not use a name if if was super popular and overused.

Spell it backwards . . .

These kinds of comments baffle me. What are you, twelve?

Pity all those Orlas…🙄

Weeping 😂 at 'obvious reasons' not to use Lana -totally unobvious to me! Is it because it means 'wool' (clutching at straws as quite oblique)?

Spell it backwards . . .

I once worked with woman called Hero, after a Shakespearean character. Her name really suited her and I really liked it but it didn’t make it into my short list.

other names I liked…
Maximillian

Verity
Astrid
Sapphira

I love the name Isis and really considered it - luckily we had boys….

I also really like Amarachi but we have no Nigerian ancestry (and again, boys).

Silas was another name I really liked by DH hated. Our surname starts with S so might have been an issue if they had a lisp……Same with Sacha / Sasha which I also loved but DH didn’t. I clearly have a thing for the letter S!

Omg, we have such similar taste! DD was very nearly Isis. I also loved Cyrus.

I loved Sasha but DH didn't, but we do have an Asher.

CautiousOptimist · 19/06/2024 19:54

Ruby (love it, but can't help but sing the song when I hear it)
Also Alice for the same reason, I just couldn't do it.

ricekrispi · 19/06/2024 19:48

Roman - would have used it for a boy but had three girls

RedHelenB · 19/06/2024 19:48

Sorrel

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 19/06/2024 19:44

I love Jesse and Sasha for boys.

BESTAUNTB · 19/06/2024 19:41

I like Maxine, Angela, Joanne, Carla and Simone. But I know they sound like the sixth form register circa 1996!

TheGriffle · 19/06/2024 19:35

Vada - loved it but not brave enough to use it, plus Dh is a big Star Wars fan and we didn’t want the Darth Vader references all her life

Wednesday - Might have considered it if dd was born on a Wednesday

Juno - also loved this but again, not brave enough to use it.

theaa · 19/06/2024 19:32

I love Pearl, and Bartholomew but shortened to Bartie!

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 19/06/2024 19:29

Marsali
Eilidh
Laoghaire

Too difficult for non Scots to spell or pronounce

Andrea - murdered by many accents

Jenna and Callie - my favourite names growing up as was a Blake's 7 fan.

LittleGreenDuck · 19/06/2024 19:20

Greta. Nearly used it for DD, well before Greta Thunberg was in the public eye. I'm glad we didn't, but I still love it.

Montgomery. I don't think we're posh enough to pull it off.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 19/06/2024 19:16

I think the name Seraphina is beautiful but I just find it a bit much for a small child to pull off! I'm also not sure what potential shortenings would be and this is an issue for me. I would be full of regret if my child ended up with a shortened version that I really dislike. As a result, all my children have names that are only 3 or 4 letters!

Also love Dmitri but not sure I would use it having no Greek blood between us! I also like Lysander but it's a bit...well...Shakespeare!

I adore the name Myra. The sound of it, the spelling, everything.

Hindley really did a number on that name.

Triskeline · 19/06/2024 19:08

‘Obvious reasons’?

Read it backwards.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 19/06/2024 19:10

Azalea (Zalie for short).
