Eve and Steve- thoughts ?

We love the name Evelyn for a girl and would shorten to Eve. Only issue is my husband is called Stephen and goes by Steve with everyone bar his parents. Do you think Eve and Steve are too similar? Will they sound silly together? My husband assures me nobody would make the connection or think about them rhyming m. Would appreciate honest opinions

I know a couple who are Steve and Eve. It's rarely mentioned and I think it's only on cards when people realise. I think for daddy and daughter you'll be fine. She'll spend a lot of her life not signing cards with her Dad

mathanxiety · 19/06/2024 17:22

If you intend to call your daughter Eve, why are you going to use Evelyn?

Eve and Steve are fine. They're not siblings. Steve will be 'Dad' pretty soon, too.

She'll probably end up being called Evvie (from Evelyn) anyway.

AngelaBB · 19/06/2024 17:21

Use the nn Evie.

Pinkbits · 19/06/2024 17:20

It's even stevens, meaning neck and neck.

@CamdenQueen , you're not in the UK then presumably.

Nope. Although I did live there for years and only came across one Evie

First think it did was make me smile, I think it's adorable! Occasionally their names will be put together - e.g. 'Eve and Steve are coming to the party but the mum can't make it'. But very rarely, I'd imagine, and I think it sounds lovely! It's a bit silly, and might make people smile/have a chuckle but it's lovely.

You should not name twins Eve and Steve. Or brothers and sisters.

Dad and daughter is fine, you won’t be bellowing “Eve and Steve! Teatime!” up the stairs will you? Especially if she goes by Evelyn.

AIstolemylunch · 19/06/2024 12:28

yes NN Evie - Evie and Steve is fine. Or start calling him Stevie :)

I know a married couple called Andy and Mandy and nobody bats an eyelid so this seems like a total non issue to me

Come to think of it, I know a married Bev & Kev. I don't think it's had much impact on their lives, aside from a brief period when there was a TV advert featuring a Bev & a Kev.

Redberies · 19/06/2024 16:21

I know a married couple called Andy and Mandy

But they had no say in their names... they have to accept their matching names!

Parents have a choice in naming their children

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 19/06/2024 16:20

Evelyn Stephelyn

Redberies · 19/06/2024 16:19

I wonder how George Foreman coped with that - having five sons all called George (and the same middle name as his own)?

He didn't!

They all have unrelated nicknames - Monk, Bigwheel, Red, etc

Thanks everyone for your responses. I’m glad it doesn’t seem to be a big deal to most. I didn’t know about Steve jobs and agree, nothing has been made of it over the years

I think it’s ok but my god there are soooo many Evies/Evelyns.

Not where I’m from! It wouldn’t be overused at all

..he tended to give all of his teddies the same name as him, as his pool of known names was very limited...
This is why young children shouldn't be allowed to name their siblings Smile

Their surname isn't McKay, is it - like in the old White Heather Club song?!

Evelyn Waugh's wife was also called Evelyn - their friends referred to them as Hevelyn and Shevelyn to distinguish!

The Evelyn's we know are shortened to ev and evvy (eh-vee) rather than eve or evie, fits better with Steve if you do that too.

It's fine. Some children have the same name as parents anyway.

I've always wondered how that doesn't get very confusing for the family - so the others call out a name that is shared by two people in the house and they don't know which of them is wanted/being addressed.

The purpose of a name is that it's your own individual identity in the family, although you will obviously invariably share it with other people from outside your family. There are tens of thousands of different names out there; it absolutely baffles me when the only name that a parent can find that they like happens to be the same as their own name.

I mean, when our DS (only child) was very little, he tended to give all of his teddies the same name as him, as his pool of known names was very limited and small children are naturally self-centred; but to be naming an actual human baby, that does usually suggest that you will be an adult, with a much wider field of reference.

ATribeCalledQuestion · 19/06/2024 12:21

I think this is a non issue! Lots of kids have literally the same name as one of their parents. Siblings might be slightly different I guess, but I cannot see why it would be an issue for Eve's dad to be called Steve

mum1345 · 19/06/2024 12:19

My partner is Joe (Joseph) and we have a little one called Beau (who is 11)
We've come this far without any problems! 😂
Go for it! If you love the name use it 😊

Firsttimebabymummy · 19/06/2024 12:04

It's fine but Evelyn would most likely get Ev as a nn. I really like Ev but worth considering incase you don't!

The Evelyn I know gets Evvie (like Effie) at school!

RailwayCutting · 19/06/2024 11:54

Maybe not siblings but OK as father and daughter
