Girls name that work in Spain and England

karmachameleon999 · 17/06/2024 17:15

Am looking for girls names that work in Spain and England. I don't like names that can be easily shortened or likely to have a nickname. Prefer shorter names, as given name.

I like:
Sofia but it's quite popular
Lucia but worried it will be pronounced Loo-chee-ah rather than Loo-see-ah.
Athena which I know is Greek and not sure if it works in Spain.
Alba but doesn't work with surname.

Thank you.

Alba

In Spain it means fair (which if you're a Celtic or Anglo Saxon origin Brit your child might be compared to the Spaniards!) and in Scotland it means Scotland.

Do Spanish people say it as "Hulia" though?

Yes, the pronunciation is different but my DD is used to that and answers to both ways.

I am Spanish and my husband is English, our DD is called Julia and we have Emma on the list as well. We were looking for names that would work in both countries

Silvia is also a lovely name.
Ilona.
Amaia.
Inma.
All the Nurias I know are awesome!! Of all ages.

We toyed with Maribel but DS was, well, a DS!

Also know a Maria del Luz who goes by Malu.
Maria del Mar and Maria Paz just go by Mar and Paz, the Maria gets dropped.

I have a Lucia (we pronounce it loocheah) but most people say Looseah. Luckily she doesn't mind either (and neither do I really). Randomly she gets called Lydia a lot too.
I like Maria, Josephina, Francesca, Ariana - names that end in A have a nice ring!

I can't guarantee that the article is reliable.

Whatever you chooses do check meaning, inference and cultural views.

A lot of the names being suggested here are the Spanish equivalent of calling a young child Mildred or Mavis and haven't been used since abuela's abuela was born.

I work with Spanish kids a lot and Sofia, Sara, Ines, Ana, Maria, Julia,Luisa, Isabel etc are all still up there in popularity.

Fritatayay · 18/06/2024 08:25

@SallyWD they're lovely but I think they're a bit old fashioned in Spain these days, there was a big move away from the saints names. People naming their kids Cynthia and Soledad etc instead.
But maybe like here old lady names are having a comeback!

Alma? Rosa?

Some from our family:
Luz
Aurora
Iris

They are not pronounced exactly the same though.

There's a really funny meme on this at the moment with Latina mums explaining the meaning of their kids names like 'Dolores, Socorro, Consuelo' etc

DramaLlamaBangBang · 18/06/2024 07:57

Luna, Rosa, Isabella? DS has a Cuban friend called Caroline.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 18/06/2024 07:52

Paola is a beautiful name. My colleague with that name doesn't seem to have issues with people pronouncing it.

CoalTit · 18/06/2024 07:38

Natalia (not short, I realise)

CoalTit · 18/06/2024 03:18

Veronica. It would take an accent on the o in Spanish, and I can't work out how to do that here, but you get the idea.
I'm pretty sure Ines also needs an accent on the e in Spanish. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.
