Lily Beatrice is gorgeous. Lily might be popular but it’s been that way for about 30 years now and its a fairly classic name (similar to Rose) - and has a pleasant sound so I can understand why it’s so popular. Beatrice is elegant with a rich literary heritage - and gives her a fall back when older if she doesn’t want a popular name (although imo most kids are happy to meet others with their name and like to be able to buy tat in the shops with their name on it 🤣)

I know Dorothy is retro cool again now - but the ones I know go by Dotty instead as they think Dorothy is so old fashioned sounding. Ditto Nancy - retro cool but not a pleasant sounding name imo and very trendy. I’m personally not keen on names where almost all the ones you meet are under 10 or 70 plus - it suggests to me the names are going to sound dated again in future.

Thanks @IamnotwhouthinkIam really helpful 😊

Nancy Rose

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 17/06/2024 20:58

Missed Effie and Isabella. Effie is cute - but again is very “now” so is likely going to sound dated in the future unless you use it as a nn for classic Josephine or similar.

Isabella is another one of those names (like Lily) that is at least more classic, although popular - and again has been popular for around 30 years so at least you meet adults with the name too. Be aware that between all the Isabelle/Isabel/Isobel’s too though it might seem more popular than it actually is.

Agree with PP that middle names are rarely used, so pick the first name you like best rather than focusing on the combo! I don’t think it matters if first and middle names “flow”.

I like all of your options apart from Isabella, which is too frilly for my taste. I’d pick Dorothy or Rose with any of the others in the middle.

'a bit grim' @PurpleReindeer2 really?

The name means 'gift of god' and there was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, etc. I actually think it's quite nice, and deserves to have a come back. There's also Dorothea.

Beatrice and Dorothy were both popular last time (late Victorian to early 20th century I think) at around the same time. But for some reason Beatrice is recently popular again, however Dorothy isn't. Dorothy is nicer IMO, I don't like the sound Beatrice makes, 'beer-triss'. It's nicer pronounced the French way, more like 'bay-a-trees' I think. It seems very arbitrary how some names come back and others don't. I would expect that Dorothy will return eventually though, maybe a bit later.

PurpleReindeer2 · 17/06/2024 19:13

Isabella Beatrice is my favourite from you list of names. I think Dorothy is a bit grim for a child.

Illpickthatup · 17/06/2024 19:09

Isabella Violet (less popular flower name)

Isabella Beatrice. Rose is a big fat 🥱 from me.

Love this - was almost my DD’s name!

Went for Isabel Beatrice in the end

Unfortunately OH isn’t keen on Beatrice as a first name. 🙁

Rose Beatrice?

TheCultureHusks · 17/06/2024 12:33

The first name is the important one. The other honestly has no significance to anyone but you! So don’t choose based on the ‘pair’ - choose the first name you like best. You’ll regret it if you don’t.

Beatrice is the best, and Bea an amazing short form but if your partner doesn’t like it, both Dorothy and Nancy are lovely. Think Dorothy edges it as has more options for shortening.

Rose works better than Lily for both of them, as a middle name.

TeamPolin · 17/06/2024 12:28

Prefer Beatrice Lily tbh.
Nancy Rose is nice

Dorothy is frumpy IMO....

Mumofgirls2017 · 17/06/2024 11:15

Isabella Beatrice. Rose is a big fat 🥱 from me.

AngelDelightButNotStrawberry · 17/06/2024 08:13

Rose is every girls middle name, it’s so overdone. Not keen on Dorothy at all, Lily is lovely but so popular. Love Isabella but not Bella.

Firsttimebabymummy · 17/06/2024 08:03

Dorothy Rose would be my choice

Springwatch123 · 17/06/2024 07:01
