Apolline

It’s late, DH won’t stop going on about it so I’m keen to hear opinions.
As mentioned in last post DH and I are expecting our first baby girl. We had somewhat settled on Camille as the first name.
In some browsing we both loved the name
Apolline. DH is French and I am Norwegian but we agreed a name that works best in French makes more sense for us.
DH hasn’t stopped mentioning Apolline since. Now I love the name I really do, maybe more than Camille, however I have a few concerns

  1. Will British people pronounce it as “Appo-lyn or appalling” ?
  2. Nicknames - Polly? Appo/Appi?
  3. Is it hard to wear? Especially with our surname being Montaigne I’d worry it sounds a little pretentious and could be hard to pull off?

So thoughts on Apolline?

Thank you everyone, I think it’s set we will use Apolline, I like the connection to Greek mythology.

Now the issue is middle names - we love Manon as a middle name, but also feel there should be something Norwegian (well Scandinavian) in there so maybe Linnea or my maiden name Hansen. I think I love Apolline Manon though!

People might hear "This is A Pauline"!

TheaBrandt · 09/06/2024 11:21

I would wonder how you had time skipped and given birth in the Roman Empire.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/06/2024 11:20

I really like it, but I think it's one of those French names which, although it's not likely to be mispronounced that much by Brits, it just won't sound nearly as nice when not said in a French accent.

OldTinHat · 09/06/2024 11:18

I read that in the same way as 'trampoline'.

No one wants their daughter being jumped on her whole life.

ThePassageOfTime · 09/06/2024 11:17

I know one. She is always known as Apple.

Mumsongums · 09/06/2024 11:15

I love it !
I have Polly but my grandma was Appolonia and I'm Polish so I have 'Pol Pol' -Polly in Polish Polly is Pola.
Appolonia is a Greek girl's name, meaning “belonging to Apollo.” Apollo was one of the most important gods in Greek and Roman mythology, representing music, poetry, medicine, and

I'd imagine A-Pauline or Apple-ine not sure how you pronounce it.

ThingsWillOnlyGetBetter · 09/06/2024 10:24

It’s beautiful and goes well with your surname. Who cares if some think it ‘pretentious’? Small minds gonna small mind.

FloofPaws · 09/06/2024 10:08

Considering your surname I think it works really well! A lot of cities are so multicultural these days anyway, I wouldn't worry myself.

user1492757084 · 09/06/2024 09:22

Apolline will be easy enough to learn.
It's pretty, you like it and it suits your surname.
Camille is also lovely.
Similar names ..
Pauline
Pomeline - apple related and Polly could also be a nick name.
Aline

LaMarschallin · 09/06/2024 09:11

I think the word sounds nice and I like Polly as a diminutive, but it reminds me of the bottled water brand Apollinaris.
Much prefer Camille.

Xyz1234567 · 09/06/2024 09:08

Apolline gasoline company.

Xyz1234567 · 09/06/2024 09:07

It's ok but for some reason sounds like a brand name- I kind of see it on a big sign above an American gas station, or stuck on the front of kitchen appliances, like Kitchen Aid. I have no idea why but that's definitely the vibe I get, sorry.

Bumblebee413 · 09/06/2024 08:59

I know an Apolline, it’s a beautiful name and no one has any trouble saying it. She’s an adult and doesn’t shorten it x

Fullofthejoysofspring · 09/06/2024 08:59

To be clear, we all lived in London and there were no problems with pronunciation that I know of.

fruitbrewhaha · 09/06/2024 08:58

I like it, or camille

Fullofthejoysofspring · 09/06/2024 08:57

I knew an Appolline, her family was also French. I don't remember anyone mispronouncing it. Lovely name.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 09/06/2024 08:56

It doesn't work in Britain

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/06/2024 08:53

Although its long and could sound pretentious, your surname means it’s obviously linked to your heritage rather than given simply to sound fancy, plus it’s got the lovely short option “Polly” for every day use. I would say it “APP- uh- leen”.

IdaPolly · 09/06/2024 05:20

I love it. Nickname Polly is nice

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 09/06/2024 04:38

I’m not a fan and think your daughter will spend her life spelling it and explaining to people. Camille is beautiful

amylou8 · 09/06/2024 04:33

I prefer Camille, beautiful name. But Apoline is nice so if you both love it go for it.
I'd pronounce in app-o-leen.

DramaAlpaca · 09/06/2024 04:14

OK, just had a Google and Apolline is correct. My bad.

Go for it!

DramaAlpaca · 09/06/2024 04:12

I think it's correctly spelled Appoline, rather than Apolline. But I'm open to being corrected on that.

I'd have Polly as a diminutive because it's adorable without being overly twee.
