why are people obsessed by whether names are 'chavvy' (nasty expression)..

But, declasse or not, DH won't use it if KK uses it for her DS, which is due just before ours.....

I apologise for any offence I've caused. I am slightly obsessed about names. Much more so than the average person. Names that start at the top do roll downwards, this isn't MY personal observations. Anybody read the book Freakonomics??

But if I have said something negative about a child's name I am sorry. I tend to regard names like the housing market or something or the stock market.. I observe them with great interest but also with detachment.

I should be more careful not to crash off careless comments that can hurt people though, so

BTW you are wrong. I know many children with those names who are bright and wonderful children

Maybe because the 30 something Sharon I know loathes her name. DH's older half sister has 2 of these 70s 'chavvy' names and she laughs but winces at the same time, especially if she has to give her full name.

all down to people's personal perceptions of what they consider chavvy or not

all rude in my opinion and if you can't say anything nice about a name someone has chose then don't say anything at all

I dislike the term chavvy too. Nasty, spiteful and snobbish. There are some truly awful names in our school but I don't give a toss whether they are 'chavvy' or not.

I agree with M-C, but surely those names you listed are the Tyler, Jayden, Keiran, Reece, Bradley, Brendan, Harley, Ellis, Logan, Ashton, Taylor, Corey, Jay, Bailey, Jordan, Riley, Harrison, Kyles and Madison, Lacey, Summer, Paige, Brooke, Sienna, Skye, Tia, Tilly, Alisha, Courtney, Shannon and Lexies of today.

NOT names like Dylan, Archie, Oscar, Finlay, Joshua, Lewis, Charlie, Jake, Jack, Calum, Max, Lucas, Isaac, Aaron, Toby, Leo, Freddie, Zachary or Ruby, Megan, Poppy, Erin, Holly, Molly, Millie, Maisie, Jasmine, Caitlin, Georgia, Evie, Isla etc.., because that would be the WHOLE top 100 names! And 95% of 20+ year olds will have tacky, dated names!

I'll give you 6 reasons why people care and try not to give their children Chav names.

AdamAnt lol! It's perhaps better to be considered déclassé oneself, than to give your child a name that might label him/her in years to come. "délassé" still lol.

If people post asking for opinions, then other posters will give their opinions... and names are a fairly big deal. First impressions for the rest of their lives and all that.

I agree. I think that anyone who cares so much is by definition a little déclassé.
