why are people obsessed by whether names are 'chavvy' (nasty expression)..

obviously somehow desperate for social status

and yes I am pleased with my childrens names - why on earth would I not be?

I don't really think there is such thing as a chav name. The only names that I really dislike are made up names or names that are just stupid like Jenna Taylor (knew one at work) or Thomas Thomas (poor chap was always really embrassed when he had to give it out).

I don't like names where it appears that the parents have really tried too hard to find something original and it ends up sounding a bit poncey but that is just my opinion. I also feel a bit sorry for children when they have been given a really old fashioned name because the parents thought it was due a comeback but it never quite happened, I think that a Jayden will have a much easier time at school than a little Wallace and although Jayden is not exactly my cup of tea it makes me think of a young funky cool teenager who is very popular whereas little Wally just inspires images of a bookish chap in the corner who never gets picked for the football team.

Arguing about names is a totally futile exercise. I see names fitting into groups
e.g.

Felix, Isaac and Ruby
Araminta, Atticus and Octavia
Tyler, Jamie and Ellie-Mae
Benjamin, Sophie and Amy
Willow, India and Heath

..........none of the groups need labels such as chavvy or classy - they just have a different feeling or schema for me. Everyones perceptions of what names fit into which group is different - what's the problem?

I know of someone who adopted a Jayden.
He is now James.

She's probably chosen names that might aid her desperation of social status. She seems to be very pleased with herself that they may be classed as poncey. Eye-rollers no doubt.

Surprised Ella isn;t on the chavvy names list though tbh, People always say how 'common' it is but it's DD's name and I prefer it to half the supposedly 'ok' names.

BTW, where I used to live, the peopel who would have been classed as chavvy had children called things like Leo, Josh, Lewis, Caitlin, Georgie, Freddie etc, all from the supposed 'ok' list so it's all about opinion. I'm not saying those names are chavvy btw, just knew 'chavvy' people whose children had those names.

I'm not annoyed at all connie. There will always be some people who dislike your child's name because of personal perceptions. I'm guilty of that too!

I have a name my parents thought was really original........ IT'S NOT... It's very 70s, very dated and very common.......

See, that's why, even though I LOVE certain names, I'm concious of the perception 20 years down the line.........

I'm a mother with a chavvy name (on MadameCholet's list), and I hate it. Though apparently it was quite posh when my parents chose it, and developed the less desirable associations as I got older. Really don't want to lumber my children with names which carry the same kind of stereotypes though.

exactly maryann it is IMPOSSIBLE to choose a name to suit everyone and one that people will approve of so why bother?!

its your choice and they way I see it, not many people grow up liking their own name until they're an adult anyway, as long as you're happy with the choice why bother

That was not a hate list! I like lots of the names on there. I just think they may date. I wouldn't think that the family were the c word if I heard those names. I think the right person can carry any name tbh. I love the name Skye and it would definitely be on my list if I was having a girl.
I know a really really posh family with a Madison. You never can tell these days, most names don't belong to a particular class.
