Just wondering which pronunciation others would assume?

And/or which you prefer?

Depends where you are.
I'd imagine if you're in an English speaking country, the first pronunciation would be assumed, whilst in most other countries, the second.

I only know one pronounced Ana- stay- zia, so I would assume that was how it was said.

That's what I would guess at first, but if they had Russian or Eastern European heritage, Anna-stah-zhya wouldn't surprise me either.

I've known two, both pronounced it Anna-Stay-Sha. They were related to each other. Both used the shorter name Stay-Sha for day to day.

Yes I think the ah sound is the original Russian and Greek version.
ay sound is probably the anglicised version so you can choose which ever you prefer

I would pronounce it Anastar-sia and I'm not posh or pretentious! I thought it was the correct pronunciation of a Russian name, and the "stay" pronunciation was American. Happy to be told I'm wrong though.

Nobody's adding an actual 'r' sound. The 'ar' bit is the OP's phonetic representation of an 'ah' sound, because 'ar' and 'ah' sound identical in most English accents in England. It's the difference between a rhotic and non-rhotic accent and it comes up on virtually every pronunciation-related thread on MN!

@whynosummerI can only imagine the star pronunciation for an Australian accent?
I've lived/worked in 3 countries, 1 being Australia, and I've always heard it pronounced the 1st way, with 'stay' in the middle.

In my accent, and I'm assuming the OPs too, "star" sounds exactly the same as "stah", as has been covered on these threads a million times.

Ay is the more common pronunciation in British English, the only nastarzya I know is Polish

If I heard the second, I would assume the parents are trying to sound posh, with emphasis on the trying.
