Oliver VS Miles

Me and my partner are pretty set on Oliver. Loved the musical since being a young child. It flows nicely. BUT I do get slightly put off that it's so popular. Despite not knowing many Oliver's at all.

Miles is a more recent name that I suggested and my partner said yes, and he mentioned that it will probably become more popular because of Spiderman.

I told my dad and he said he doesn't like Miles so that has put me off a bit.

What do you think sounds better?

Oliver Thomas (middle name Thomas after my granddad)

Miles Oliver or Miles Thomas

I like both, but Oliver edges it. I don't care how popular it is. The only reason I didn't use it myself is because there's about three already in DH's extended family, all with the same surname.

Wow haha. It's greatly loved then. Yeah I think the only reason I won't use it is if someone very close to me does. Otherwise I'll have to deal with how popular it is 😁

Team Oliver here too OP! I'm due tomorrow and I feel like we've been round and round through every single name under the sun (we don't know if it's a girl or a boy) and just keep coming back to Oliver for a boy!

Despite its popularity we only know of two and they're both adults, one in his 50s and the other in his 30s, which at least reassures me that it's not a flash in the pan popular name that will always be associated with this decade.

Yay for Oliver. I think it's just lovely.

Please do come back and let us know if you do choose it 🙂

in that case the name Melody makes a perfect choice, do you have a potential middle name ?

megadreamer8 · 31/05/2024 02:30

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 31/05/2024 01:55

oh that's different and really nice, I've never met a Melody.

Thank you. I've never met one either and it just stood out to me. I'm a singer songwriter so it has a lot of meaning to me too. I feel like it goes okay with Oliver, both three syllables. Three syllable last name too that begins with M.

I just wondered if you already had a son or daughter, which is why I asked.

Have you chosen a girl's name ?

Yes, I like Melody 😊

Is this your first baby ?

I'm planning to start trying to conceive so just trying to gather some thoughts on my name choices 😊

KirstenBlest · 30/05/2024 21:13

It depends on what the surname is. Try both names with it e.g. Oliver Maddison, Miles Middleton, Miles Macmillan, Oliver McGowan or whatever the surname is.
Also bear in mind any potential diminutive.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 30/05/2024 20:59

which one goes best with the last name that baby will have ?

The last name begins with M and is 3 syllables long. Obviously there's the alliteration with Miles which I quite like. But I am starting to think my original idea of Oliver Thomas is the best option. So it'd be OTM. Rather than MTM or MOM 🤣🤣

Oliver Thomas is gorgeous

RogueFemale · 30/05/2024 21:01

Never known an Oliver who wasn't known as Olly. Which to me sounds either rugger blokey or weedy.

Miles, ugh. Same class of ugh as Piers and Jeremy.

Oliver - it's popular but popular for a reason imo. It's a nice name

Exactly this. Popular for a reason 🥰

Oliver is pretty classic - plus it’s been popular (top 100 ) for 50 years now and has a pleasant sound as well as strong historical and cultural associations in the UK which means it doesn’t feel quite as trendy as it should do based on the numbers imo.

Miles may be less popular but it also sounds less classic imo - so a potential surge in the popularity of Miles would actually make it feel trendier to me than Oliver. Plus on a juvenile note, it rhymes with Piles which I struggle to unhear for some reason🤣 ( I don’t have the same issue with most other rhyming names/words 🤷‍♀️) .

Thank you for this! It is such a classic. I do get a bit put off that it is so popular but I can't help but like it.

I would go with Stephen or David as a first name as more unusual nowadays. Probably David as goes better with Thomas. David Oliver Thomas

I don't mind David but not a huge fan of the nn Dave. Stephen is okay, but wouldn't be my choice of name. My family member tries to go by Stevie as I don't think they're a fan of their own name. Oliver just flows.

Miles is tall, very intelligent and with an appealing smile.

(Hello, Black Sheep by Georgette Heyer! Yes, I will marry you, thank you very much)

Oliver is a slightly keen schoolboy with a plaster on his knee, or a bookish guy with glasses who needs to get a bit more sunshine. Good hearted, though.

(Or is the identical chartacter to the above Miles but in Lady Of Quality also by Heyer, and not quite as lovely as Miles; so I would only marry him to escape living with the ghastly relatives)

Hahaha. This is what is marvelous about our brains, we have so many varying perspectives! 😊

I get what you mean and I hate when that happens to a perfectly good name.
To me though, Oliver sounds classic and romantic. I love fiction and Oliver is always an interesting character.
