Not really for a baby name but I thought this was the best place.
Does anyone know a Geoff who pronounces it Gee-off?

There's a La-a at the school I work in. I feel sorry for her, because of the 6 La-as in her year, she's the only Lahyphena.

Createausernametoday · 05/09/2024 16:10

Yes, I know 17 Geoffs that pronounce it Gee-off

FayCarew · 30/05/2024 23:29

Jimothee actually.

katebushh · 30/05/2024 23:00

You'll be telling be Jim is short for Jimothy next.

tobee · 30/05/2024 16:37

I want to know why this has come up @Daisypod

CountingCrones · 30/05/2024 15:54

Only by people who were mispronouncing Geoff-short-for Geoffrey

TealDog · 30/05/2024 15:53

I’ve only ever heard it pronounced as Jeff.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 30/05/2024 15:52

🤣

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I have no idea.

Game of Thrones. George Martin (author) made up lots of names that sound like real names but are just slightly different. One of them, Arya, is now quite often used as a girls' name (admittedly, Aria is a lot more common).

Notreat · 30/05/2024 14:55

No never heard that. Only heard it pronounced Jeff.
Gee off sounds odd and difficult to say

TheSandgroper · 30/05/2024 14:54

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I have no idea.

Oh, and there is Joffre (pron Joffree).

Joffrey Baratheon comes to mind. One of the most loathsome characters I've ever encountered in a TV drama!

zingally · 30/05/2024 14:46

I've never heard that pronunciation.

But I have heard gee (rhymes with tea) - off or (pronunciation) gay-of.

I think it's Russian, but I can't come up with the right spelling!

PurpleChrayn · 29/05/2024 19:58

Gee-off sounds like slang for wanking.

milkonesugar36 · 28/05/2024 20:25

Google the Michael McIntyre sketch of ge-off

ohyesido · 28/05/2024 16:32

Only as a surname, and it was more like JOFF.

it’s not a potential new baby’s name you’re considering then…?

TheSandgroper · 28/05/2024 16:30

Oh, and there is Joffre (pron Joffree).

TheSandgroper · 28/05/2024 16:28

Gough Whitlam, Australian Prime Minister.

But I have never heard of anyone mucking about with Geoff.

user1492757084 · 28/05/2024 12:21

I've never met a Geoff who pronounces his name anything but Jeff. Geoffrey and Geoff are very well known where I live..

There is a similar looking name, Gough, that is pronounced Goff but I have never heard of that one being mixed up with Geoff either.

Eistigi · 27/05/2024 14:24

Thanks @Daisypod I should have said I've never heard of either - only Jeff. Interesting that others have.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 27/05/2024 14:24

Do you mean said Jee-off (like the start of Genie) or Gee-off (like the start of Geezer?) - I haven’t heard either, only heard it said Jeff, but interested in what the other pronounciation would be!

Daisypod · 27/05/2024 14:20

Gee to rhyme with wee. Interesting mix of responses thanks

Eistigi · 27/05/2024 14:07

Just for clarification is it Gee-off to rhyme with Wee or to rhyme with the letter G? Can't think of a better way to say soft G or hard G?

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 27/05/2024 12:32

Of course it's not Ge-off, that's ridiculous. Short for Geoffrey, a name that's been round for over a thousand years, pronounced Jeff. Anyone who pronounces it otherwise is a total thickhead.
