We're having a second baby girl, and can't come up with a name we love. The middle name for this one is likely to be Pearl.

Both DP and I like:
Elsa/Ilsa only put off by Frozen associations or spelling
Willa
Nina
Ruby
Rosa

Names one of us likes but the other has vetoed
Aphra
Jane
Leni
George (not short for anything)
Maggie (because dislike Margaret)

We wouldn't use Maude, Stella, Edith, Clementine, Margot or Nell.

What?!!!!!!

The OP hasn't said that she is letting her DD name the new baby!

However I do know two families who have asked the older child(ren) what names they would choose for their baby sibling . . . in one case the parents went with the children's choice and in the other they used the child's choice as a 2nd name. It can be a lovely way of involving older children and preparing them for the new baby, but can also be risky as well!!!!

I think it's sweet to let them have some input! My daughter is 5 and very much regards us as a trio, to her the baby is 'our' baby. However, most of her name choices are batshit so I think I'll probably let her feel part of things by discussing the shortlist with her and no more than that. My dad chose his youngest sibling's middle name which I think is probably an appropriate level of involvement.

I love Willa but in the accent here it sounds just too close to Willy 😥

SpicyMargaritaPlease · 24/05/2024 10:32

I like Willa best. And Willa Pearl sounds lovely.
When I read your list I wanted to suggest June.

JimNast · 24/05/2024 08:23

@KnitnNatterAuntie , I didn't say she was letting her DD name the new baby.

The children can be involved or make suggestions but depending on their ages, the suggestions might not be ideal. The younger child has no say in the older siblings' names.

@ladycarlotta , no you didn't say it, and I didn't say you did.

I like the name Lucy but older siblings should not be choosing their sibling's name.

I have a Clara and other potentials I loved were Delphine and Adeline. Both vetoed by DH!
Also Sybil, Phyllis, Constance, Gwendolyn, Penelope, Persephone, Flora, Matilda.

I like Nina. Sorry but like the name Ruby but not with a second name of Pearl.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! Really like names like Olive, Ida, Astrid, Aster, Greta... my daughter's obessed with the name Lucy so no doubt she'd be choosing that.

I'm reading your original post as saying that you don't like any names on your list enough to use them. Apologies if that's not the case. How about:

Similar vibe:
Alma, Alba, Agnes, Adele, Anais, Ailsa, Alice, Arwen, Ada, Bronte, Blythe, Bonnie, Betty, Bessie, Cerys, Claire, Clarice, Dana, Dolly, Dora, Effie, Ella, Esme, Enid, Flora, Faith, Fleur, Grace, Honor, Hazel, Heidi, Ida, Irena, Inez, June, Josie, Judy, Kaye, Laya, Lois, Laura, Lara, Mary, Martha, Mara, Marnie, Mabel, Maeve, Nita, Nora, Niamh, Noelle, Olive, Orla, Peggy, Pippa, Posy, Remi, Romy, Rita, Sylvia, Sara, Sorrel, Tara, Thea, Una, Vita, Vera, Winnie, Zia, Zara

I also think Clara goes well with:
Abigail, Annabelle, Beatrice, Beatrix, Camilla, Cecilia, Daphne, Delilah, Emmeline, Evelyn, Frances, Felicity, Georgina, Giselle, Harriet, Harmony, Isabel, Imogen, Juliet, Joanna, Katherine, Katrina, Liliana, Leonie, Miranda, Madeleine, Natalia, Naomi, Olivia, Octavia, Phoebe, Philippa, Rosanna, Romilly, Sophia, Scarlett, Thalia, Tamara, Verity, Victoria

you're right - there are names we like but nothing's particularly lighting me up? I think maybe part of it is needing it to sit well with our first child's name. eg I really like Cora and Cary but we simply cannot have either with a Clara.

Some lovely suggestions here - I really like Alba and Ida, and Sorrel is so sweet. I used to really like Harriet but don't love it any more.

Clara and Rosa or Elsie?
Ruby Pearl doesn't sound right to me imo

You may like
Christabel
Devina
Felicity
Harriet
Iris
Mabel
Olive

Thank you. I really like Olive! I agree, if we used Ruby we couldn't use Pearl for mn, it's a bit odd and she might get a lot of themed jewellery

But of your choices, I like Willa best. Great Six Feet Under connection too.

I hadn't even thought of this! used to love that show.

The Clara I know has a sister called Penny (short for Penelope).

KnitnNatterAuntie · 23/05/2024 20:16

Clara & Josie Pearl

Clara & Rosanna Pearl

Clara & Lilian Pearl

Argen · 23/05/2024 20:11

I would pick Ruby from the names you like.

What about:

Clara & Iris
Clara & Juliet
Clara & Eleanor
Clara & Ava
Clara & Ada
Clara & Violet

WilliamButt · 23/05/2024 20:05

Nina is my favourite name of all time and my fricking husband vetoed it. I still sometimes call her Nina when no one is around (too young to understand what I'm doing).
