Remy Rupert Thomas - thoughts on this name?

I’m thinking he will probably get Remy Roo a lot as a baby/child but I think calling him Remy Rue on the birth certificate wouldn’t age well, so Rupert works for when he’s grown up.

Just as a side note, I know a lot of people say middle names don’t get used - for some reason in our family we are referred to by our first and middle names quite often (even as adults!)

It's funny how subjective all names are. I Haven't seen Ratatouille, the Disney film, so it doesn't have any impact on my opinion. However, I would find Reuben a very religious name. Some may not even know it is from the Old Testament. I think Rupert was posh decades ago but now mainstream.

The vast majority of names in use by people of European origin in the western hemisphere have a religious origin or association, whether from the books of the Bible or from saints.

TribeofFfive · 27/05/2024 20:05

I like Remy. Think I prefer it spelt Remi, though.

Rue / Roo doesn’t that mean regret? As in “she will rue the day she said that”

I would look for a different middle name.

Remy is a perfectly fine name. I know three under ten.

Rupert is a little 'Upper Class Twit' but fine as a middle name. Remy Roo is a very sweet nickname for a toddler.

Would Reuben be an option? I think it flows better between Remy and Thomas than Rupert does, tbf.

Thomas is lovely too, imo.

I really like Jonah and Bobby from your other suggestions (I personally prefer Bobby as short for Robert but I know an adult Bobby and it works fine)

berksandbeyond · 24/05/2024 08:27

Remy is a rats name so.. no

NewLifter · 24/05/2024 08:26

User85468 · 18/05/2024 10:46

I don’t think referring to a toddler as Remy Roo would be particularly offensive, but again appreciate the feedback!

I’m not particularly attached to the name, it was just another one to consider so thought I’d get some opinions.

Given the reaction I’ve had to all the other names I like (Jonah, Bobby, Sonny to name a few) clearly I’m just a cruel mum who’s going to give their child an awful name 😂

I love Jonah, Bobby and Sonny!

Honestly there is a LOT of husband here… I’m guessing his surname is being used?

His surname, his middle name that ‘means a lot to him’ - Remy is one of his choices ‘that you could compromise on’ - ok that’s the point where it’s a case of FUCK THAT.

The first name choice needs to be yours. Full stop. Ok yes you both need to be ok with the first name but I’m hesitating even saying that as it sounds to me as if he’s already vetoed names YOU love and it’s only ones HE loves like Remy that seem to get to the finish line…

He has the surname, he has Thomas?

You get the first name. The end.

The best way is saw this done was as follows. (Same situ, husband had surname and family middle) :

-you choose your five, seven, ten favourite names (however you want to work it)

-he chooses his three favourites out of those.

-you choose the final from those three.

So he does get some input and it’s not a name he hates, which is important. But it’s YOUR choice

PennyPugwash · 18/05/2024 21:36

Dislike Remy but Rupert is lovely

It’s a family tradition that means a lot to my husband

If he won't budge then you get to choose the first name. It's only fair that you get to choose a name too, even if he isn't keen on it.

ManilowBarry · 18/05/2024 20:53

I've only ever met two females with the name Remy.

Remy the rat from Ratatouille? Also why Thomas if you hate the name?

Jesus do people on MN not give their kids nicknames?????

I think Remy Roo is such a cute nickname, everyone has their family nickname surely? He can then have Remy for when he gets to that age where he’s too cool for a nickname

Love Remy Rupert Thomas, though I personally would spell it Remi instead

IamaRevenant · 18/05/2024 19:59

I like Remy! Never heard it as an insult - maybe it's a generational or regional thing (I'm late 30s and went to school in the SW)?

I really really dislike Rupert. To me it's kind of 'wet' and a bit try-hard - I feel the same about Quentin/ Tarquin/ Julian/ Crispin etc (sorry to all mothers of any of these!). I'm also not sure I'd have three two syllable names as to my ears it doesn't flow well, but that's probably just me!

For a similar vibe but (IMO) nicer, how about:
Sebastian
Nathaniel
Benjamin
Frederick
Gabriel
Matthias
Elijah
Augustus
Raphael

Catnipcupcakes · 18/05/2024 19:55

Remy Rue is trying too hard. It sounds, at best, like an overly laboured cute pet name, and at worst, like a drag name.

I know a working class Rupert who was bullied for it so mercilessly at both school and then work (at a fast food place) that he officially changed his name to Steven. Of course in the right circles this wouldn’t happen!

Amx · 18/05/2024 19:45

Sounds like a brand of spirit to me

supercalafragilisticexpealidocious · 18/05/2024 19:22

I like both names they are lovely

OliviaFlaversham · 18/05/2024 19:20

I love the names Rupert and Thomas and know more Ruperts than Thomases at the moment. I agree with pp that they sound more ‘right’ as Thomas Rupert. I also like two middle names!

Remy is not my bag but there are loads of names I wouldn’t choose that are perfectly fine. It feels unfinished and I would, until recently, assumed a girl.

nameXname · 18/05/2024 19:18

Remy is a male name, not a female one. It's the short form of 'Remigius' which means 'oarsman'. https://www.behindthename.com/name/re10my
If it matters, St Remy is particularly associated with France: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Remigius

It's fine - short and simple.

I like Rupert too - it has a long and distinguished history. https://www.behindthename.com/name/rupert

OF COURSE you are not going to call him by his nickname when he is older. (Unlike my dear deceased grandmother, who in her old age, insisted on calling my big tall father 'cuddles'. He survived. Actually, we all rather liked it. )

bakewellbride · 18/05/2024 19:07

I only know one baby boy called remy and honestly my first thought was 'but isn't that a girls name?!' I don't like it personally, ok for a girl but why add potential complication / confusion into your son's life when there are so many other names out there?

Mangoooo · 18/05/2024 18:46

Remy the rat from Ratatouille? Also why Thomas if you hate the name?

Sproutofthisworld · 18/05/2024 18:36

I’m really not getting all the Remy hate at all, I think it’s a nice name. I don’t think you need to choose a middle name to get the sound “roo” though. Remy Thomas is fine and then you can just call him “Remy roo” as much as you like as a cute nickname. Eg my dog I’m always calling Margot Moo even though Moo is not in her name! It’s just a fine sing song way to say her name.

IsadoraQuagmire · 18/05/2024 16:49

I like Remy and Rupert but they don't go together.

AnotherCountryMummy · 18/05/2024 16:48

I love Rupert, but another one who had "rem" or "remtard" used as a derogatory term at school 🙁

JimPansy · 18/05/2024 16:44

@Toastiecroissant , as I read it, in the OP, she mentions that he'll be likely to get called Remy Roo/Rue (as a nickname) and that as Remy Rue might not age well, she's considering Remy Rupert ... for the birth certificate.

I don't think there is anything wrong with my comprehension, or with most of the other posters'.

If OP had said she was going to call her baby Tobias and that his childhood nn was likely to be Toby, I suspect that most of us who have replied would think that he'd probably be Toby a lot of the time.

@User85468 , I found the I’m assuming pps reading comprehension is poor?
and I took it to refer to several posters, in which case maybe it was @Toastiecroissant who had poor comprehension. Four fingers pointing back and all that.

@User85468 has started several threads and is not finding the names universally liked on MN.

You want a cool name you like. Pick one you and the baby's father like.

If your family or circle tends to use the middle name Remy Roo will stick even if he is Remy Ru- on the BC. If you like it go with it. All sorts of names are used these days.
