You love the ghoul from Fallout, don't you?

SuperSharpShooter · 31/05/2024 17:26

Lols at Nigel Cooper's Plimsolls. Sounds like a jangly 80's indie-pop band 😂

FayCarew · 31/05/2024 14:39

Ooh! @MyOtherCarIsAPorsche . Your school pal's shoes have been confiscated!

FayCarew · 31/05/2024 14:37

Nigel Cooper's plimsolls Grin

Cathbrownlow · 31/05/2024 14:30

Actually it also reminds me of that store the co op

MyOtherCarIsAPorsche · 31/05/2024 14:23

I have a female name for my surname and I'm often called by my surname because people assume it's my first name.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I have a cousin who has a first name and surname which are both more common as first names. Again, this confuses people.

My granddaughter has a first name which is very old fashioned but is having a resurgence. They then moved house and found out their next door neighbour's dog had the same name.

I think any name has many different associations for others.

I'd go with Cooper if you like it OP.

Nigel Cooper in my class at Junior School had the biggest feet in the whole school. The headteacher used to send for him when the pupils were in trouble. He would use Nigel's plimsolls to beat them with.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/05/2024 14:21

Dreadful.

Ugly sound.

Means "barrel maker."

"Meet my son, Barrel Maker."

Meet my sons, 'person who plays the pipe', 'person who herds ewes', 'person who puts tiles on houses' and 'person who makes clothes'. Oh and by the way, we are the 'person who puts straw roofs on houses' family. Pleased to meet you, Mrs 'person who mills grain'.

Everleigh13 · 31/05/2024 14:21

I’ve read several books set in America with a character named Cooper and usually the nickname Coop. I like it. It isn’t a name I’d use myself but I think it has a nice sound to it.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/05/2024 14:17

@AllProperTeaIsTheft , Hmm, ... Wayne...

wagon driver, apparently

PitterPatter3 · 31/05/2024 13:09

Sounds too much like a surname for me. Sorry.

LemonySnickets · 31/05/2024 12:18

Whenever I hear the name cooper, this video always springs to mind!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/05/2024 12:17

Probably quite a few originating from Scottish or Irish or other languages too.

Others:

Mason
Sawyer
Ryder
Paige
Bailey
Dean
Howard
Marshall
Stuart
Tucker
Wayne

Those are just some more of the ones commonly used as first names. There are probably more surname ones that are less commonly used as first names.

FayCarew · 31/05/2024 11:49

Like what? I can only think of Carter, Tyler, Piper, Parker, Taylor, Harper, Hunter and Cooper

Clark, Bailey, Archer, Fletcher, Chandler are ones too.

It's not a lot though

Why would you name a baby after a person whose job is making barrels?

Edited

Why not? You could say similar about loads of names. Many, many surnames and some first names have original meanings related to jobs or professions, but now they are just names.

It’s a bit old hat. I teach primary and there are a lot of Coopers. They are mainly 10 years old or so.

This. The oldest Cooper I know is 14 and the youngest is 1.

I guarantee your child will have other kids in his class with the same name.

CurlewKate · 31/05/2024 11:27

Not keen on Coop.

lozrox90 · 31/05/2024 11:26

My 3 year old DS is called Cooper, Coops for short. I love it 😊

Cathbrownlow · 31/05/2024 11:11

Reminds me of Sheldon Cooper. Yep, it's a horrible name for a first name.

CarrotPotatoRooster · 31/05/2024 11:09

Phantasmagorically · 30/05/2024 09:26

No one's getting bullied for being called Cooper. Come on now.

Oh yes they are! An acquaintance has Cooper as a surname and her kids get called pooperscooper Cooper.
They hate it as a surname, I can't imagine how bad it would be as a first name!

SuperSharpShooter · 31/05/2024 11:00

I like it OP, it's a lovely name and Coop is a good nickname ... It was on my list for both boys. Vetoed by other half for all the daft reasons listed above.
Funnily enough, first born was given a dogs name (whatever that means 🤷) It was only old people who thought this and was not a 'common' boys nam. But now 17yrs on, it's been a long while since someone has said 'we had a dog called ) and his name was in the top ten for 2023, due to a popular TV character.
Trends change, pick the name you love OP. Enjoy your baby boy!

Grinchinlaws · 31/05/2024 10:49

Really dislike surnames as first names anyway, but especially this one- I don’t think it sounds nice.

IsThePopeCatholic · 30/05/2024 15:44

It’s a bit try-hard.

BinkyBeaufort · 30/05/2024 15:40

It's what we call our local pub. Named after a barrel-maker.
