Charlotte
Violet
Juliet
Scarlett
Colette

Please give your reasoning as well. I won't be offended if you have a harsh opinion.

Second question... how much weight do you put in other people's opinions about names? If someone told you she associated Violet with "violence" and you really liked the name, would her opinion deter you?

Thank you!

Charlotte
Violet
Juliet
Scarlett
Colette

I love Violet snd Scarlett
Juliet and Charlotte are pretty

Colette doesn't fit with the others, and sound clumpy and 60s to me.

I don't put much by what other people like, or their opinions on names. there are loads of names out there that I think are awful but other people love, and it doesn't matter at all

TomJonesHuhhh · 05/05/2024 20:32

Charlotte - okay but ubiquitous and hate Lottie as a nn/Charlie is nice though
Violet - shrinking/Violet Beauregarde. Prefer Viola
Juliet - classy (although I am old enough to remember Dogtanian shrieking it)
Scarlett - okay
Colette - I like this

  1. Colette
  2. Juliet
  3. Charlotte
  4. Scarlett
  5. Violet
BridgeOverTheRiverWye · 05/05/2024 20:26

@DrJoanAllenby , Violet and Violent are similar in spelling. Your post seems a bit rude.

DrJoanAllenby · 05/05/2024 20:07

Charlotte - ok
Violet - ok
Juliet - lovely but I prefer Juliette
Scarlett - ok
Colette - not keen

Anyone that associates the name Violet with violence needs their head examined.

productiony · 05/05/2024 20:03

Love colette! So fresh

meh232 · 05/05/2024 16:29

Juliet is beautiful.

Floralnomad · 05/05/2024 16:21

I like Charlotte and Juliet , I don’t like the others at all particularly Colette , which is awful .

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 05/05/2024 16:18

Charlotte

I don't like the rest

goldenretrievermum5 · 05/05/2024 16:08

Charlotte - elegant and classy with lovely nickname potential in Lottie

Violet - old lady name, also the violence connotations
Scarlett - pretty but has gotten a bit dated and chavvy more recently
Colette - needs to be left in the 70s/80s
Juliet - quite nice, would be my second choice but find it a bit boring and don’t like the nicknames

shannnxo · 05/05/2024 15:59

Violet is the only one I like

BridgeOverTheRiverWye · 05/05/2024 11:55

Charlotte - like but there are lots of them
Violet - ok but it does look like Violent, and the 3 syllables tend to not get enunciated (Vi-uh-let, Va(r)let, Vilet, Vile-uh)
Juliet - lovely but I don't like Jools. People saying Julie-Ette would irritate me.
Scarlett - nice but not when said as Scarluh
Colette - makes me think of Colin

I'd pick Scarlett or Charlotte (cousin has a Charlotte so it's out)

mactire · 05/05/2024 11:41

Rated in order:
1: Colette is a bit dated yeah but imo it’ll be seen as fresh and unique among her age group. Everything cycles back around to being cool.

2: Juliet is pretty but I hate Julie/Jools. If you’re like me, I wouldn’t use it.

3: Scarlett…I think it would be a hard name to wear if you weren’t a strong personality type, it’s quite striking. I like it but wouldn’t pick it on that basis.

4: Charlotte - another nice name but nothing stellar about it. It’s just pleasantly inoffensive. Like magnolia paint.

5: Violet - nice name but very ‘of the moment’.

Mumofgirls2017 · 05/05/2024 11:22

Juliet 100%

OzziePopPop · 05/05/2024 04:17

I love Scarlett, but I’m a Gone With The Wind fan! 😀

tinkitonki · 05/05/2024 02:37

Juliet is beautiful.

Not Charlotte, personally I don’t think it has the same vibe as the other names on your list

How about Clara?

WalkWithMeSuzieLee · 05/05/2024 02:29

I love Scarlett, Juliet & Violet, they're all feminine but strong.

Charlotte and Colette are also nice but to me Colette seems a little dated and Charlotte overused.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 05/05/2024 02:29

Charlotte is my favourite. It’s beautiful and classic. The others are ok but I don’t like them nearly as much.

I don’t really care about other people’s opinions on my baby names. DH and I choose our son’s name together and didn’t ask for anyone else’s opinions. Most people had no idea what we were planning on calling him until after he was born.

Runnerinthenight · 05/05/2024 02:23

Charlotte by far!

Seapsweetsesamethingy · 05/05/2024 02:21

Scarlett is very pretty and I don’t know of any Scarletts.

RogueFemale · 05/05/2024 02:14

Charlotte
Violet
Juliet
Scarlett
Colette

Second question... how much weight do you put in other people's opinions about names? If someone told you she associated Violet with "violence" and you really liked the name, would her opinion deter you?

Charlotte - loads of Charlottes, but a pretty name
Violet - pretty but faintly dowdy if not a pretty girl
Juliet - boring girl at school, I think there were actually two of them
Scarlett - my sister's name and have always been a bit envious (though I do like my own name a lot)
Colette - too directly associated with the author unless you're French, perhaps - would never use if UK citizen

MissedItByThisMuch · 05/05/2024 02:02

I love Juliet best - classic but not massively popular, works for all ages, and a Juliet could be 1 or 100 or anywhere in between
Charlotte is a nice classic but more popular
Don’t like Scarlett, it sounds harsh and ugly to me
Violet is fine and I find the “sounds like violent” objection silly - Charlotte sounds like harlot, Lucas sounds like mucus etc. You can do it with lots of names, it’s meaningless
Colette sounds dated to me

Theoldwoman · 05/05/2024 01:59

Charlotte

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/05/2024 01:55

Juliet by far- elegant, timeless, well known, yet surprisingly underused. People seem bothered on MN by “Julie - ET” vs “JULIE - et” but I like it both ways so that wouldn’t bother me personally (find the Juliette spelling a bit frilly though - Shakespearean Juliet just looks nicer imo).

Charlotte is elegant too and so classic but just a bit too overused/common place in comparison at the moment. Plus I’m personally not as keen on the sound “Shar- lutt”, I wish the “lott” was more pronounced as we would for nn “Lottie”.

Violet and Scarlet, I don’t find anywhere near as elegant or classic and I think they have a much harsher sound so I’m not keen( the Violet close to the word violence thing wouldn’t bother me though - the colour springs to mind first).

Colette sounds so chic - but also very strongly French to me (like Pierre on a boy). I think I’d find it hard to pull off without a French link? (Nicole would be easier but doesnt have quite the same feel, being much more widely used).

Comfysock · 04/05/2024 23:09

LOVE Colette
ADORE Juliet
Because they are beautuful French names

Nicebloomers · 04/05/2024 23:06

Colette is tres chic. Second choice Juliet. Violet is pretty. Charlotte and Scarlett are so over done.

I would not care what other people said about my baby name choices one jot. Absolutely do not reveal name choices or even shortlist until after you have your baby.
