Everyone hates my baby names!

I'm really struggling to find a name for our baby boy that my partner also likes. I steamrolled him with it last time as I found all his suggestions ridiculous and our first son is called Max, much to his disdain.

There are two names we both agree on, not my favourites but I really want one we've both chosen this time:

Sonny & Reid

I've googled these, looked at mumsnet and Reddit and it seems everyone thinks they're awful names.

Names I like which husband has said absolutely not to:

Samson (a compromise on Sonny, use Sonny as a nickname and have this on bc so he can go by Sam when he's older if he finds Sonny childish)
Luca
Rory
Charlie

Husband leans towards more American names which I'm not massively a fan of.

Any suggestions? Are the ones we agree on really that awful? Idek I'm getting so stressed with it as I'm feeling like a lot of his suggestions are just ridiculous.

I really like Sonny, and personally really don’t like Robin - but you will never find a name that is liked by everyone so focus on what you both like.

I also disagree completely with people who say Sonny is just a child’s name; I’ve known 4 Sonny‘s (two are now toddlers, one is his 20’s and one who is a grandad) and it works for them all. IMO nicknamey names don’t tend to be favoured on MN so they quite often get negative comments.

Other suggestions (sorry if I repeat any but I can’t remember all that have been mentioned!)

Hudson - NN Sonny
Mason - NN Sonny (also Max and Mason sounds cute!)
Cooper
Carter
Miles
Levi
Bodhi
Brody
Griffin - NN Finn
Eli
Oakley
Chester

Sonny's awful! I think it's more a nickname than an actual name. DP has an uncle Sonny. He's 80 if he's a day. I've always thought it was horrible. Junior is also dreadful and as for your dp's names - not in a million years!!

I do like Max and I think a shorter name would go better. Something like Max and Oscar, Max and Sam, Max and Ben, Max and James/Jamie, Max and Alex. Max and Tom.. Remind your DP that we are not in the US... and your poor child has to put up with whichever moniker you choose for the rest of his life!

DelphiniumBlue · 03/05/2024 17:57

Robin is lovely, plenty of options to shorten if you want, Bobby, Robbie, Rob... Sonny is a nickname, not a real name, and all his other suggestions are surnames, which aren't very nice at all. I could not be cajoled or bribed into calling my precious baby son any of the the names he has suggested, except Robin.

Lachlan
Dexter
Alec

dancingqueen345 · 03/05/2024 17:53

I know a Reid, it took a little getting used to but genuinely love it now and it suits him so well.

IamaRevenant · 03/05/2024 17:49

I like Sonny! Not sure about Reid. Shame Rory is a no as I love that.

Of your DH's suggestions the only one I could get on board with is Wyatt. Maybe Austin if pushed.

Elliott?
Evan? Or Ethan?
Jesse?
Nathan (Nate?)

I've only ever met one male Robin, several female Robyns/Robins. But Bobby is sweet.

CurlewKate · 03/05/2024 17:49

Reid's fine.

But Sonny's awful. Remeber he's going to be a man for longer than he'll be a child.

Grotbagg · 03/05/2024 17:47

Cameron is nice. How about Angus?

maryberryslayers · 03/05/2024 17:41

I love Sonny, I know a super cool one.

Reid is a bit odd when said out loud if I'm honest.

DinoNuggetsRUs · 03/05/2024 17:31

This is making me reconsider Robin - I did like it at the time but didn't like the nickname Rob, but think Bobby is quite cute.

What we thinking all? Robin? I want this over and done with Grin

Honestly if the choice is between Sonny, Reid, Maverick and Robin, Robin looks a pretty fucking logical choice from where I'm sitting! 😅

Pemba · 03/05/2024 17:31

Your DP has appalling taste, Junior and Maverick FGS! 😁

I don't like Reid really though and Sonny is OK-ish as a nickname but far too childish for an official name.

Your older son's name, Max is nice, and I like your other suggestions too. I think you need to overrule your daft DP somehow.

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 03/05/2024 17:15

I love Robin, and it goes with Max. Would it help to use Max as the angle into a name?

River is OK, what about Forrest? Any wrestlers called that?

Charlie is a non-name, it's like you gave up trying to think of anything.

Rory and Charlie are both ok names. They wouldn't be my choice but both fine. Reid is totally dire. Maverick even more so. Not quite as bad as Jimberley I have to say. Which will now become the yardstick for the worst name ever prize.

I do prefer your taste to your husband's but I can see it is problematic.

Of the ones he has suggested I actually like Robin or River best. I would find those easier to compromise on than the surname type ones. Max & Rob sound quite nice.

Other ideas:
Justin
Dylan
Patrick
Tristan
Joshua
Joseph/Joe

for names that are quite common in US

TheCoolOliveBalonz · 03/05/2024 16:51

Rex

Mamma1982 · 03/05/2024 16:50

We chose our second's son name whilst in hospital after he was born going through the baby app to see what suited him!

We had Tristan as our first and we both loved the name. We didn't have a clue for our second. We then chose the one we both thought suited him when he was with us. Not how I would have planned it but now it makes no difference and he's nearly three. My third son was named after my Dad who died whilst I was pregnant with him. I know lots of people don't like that kind of thing but it suits him and he's his own person! There's no right or wrong with these things!

CelesteCunningham · 03/05/2024 16:48

I really don't like Sonny or Junior - your son is a person in his own right, he shouldn't be named according to his relationship with his father.

Harrison and Jackson are probably the nicest names you could abbreviate to Sonny though.

IggyAce · 03/05/2024 16:46

My ds name would receive hate on here, and a work colleague of my dad commented it sounds like the name of an American pornstar! I laughed, and all that matters is that you can your partner like the name.
I like Sonny and Reid, of the 2 I’d probably pick Reid.

cherryassam · 03/05/2024 16:45

I like Max and Reid or Max and Sonny

Names inspired by American friends / colleagues’ kids:

Quinn
Finn
Bennett
Eli
Nico
Liam
Asher
Cooper
Jesse
Owen
Rowan

DisforDarkChocolate · 03/05/2024 16:45

Well I absolutely love Sonny so I'd suggest you stick with that.

IsoldeWagner · 03/05/2024 16:43

I don't know why you'd call your child Sonny or Junior. It's as if they don't have an actual name.
Give them a person's name.
Not Maverick.
Your last list was fine, I like all of them, particularly Caleb.

MerryChristmasToYou · 03/05/2024 16:42

Sonny - you could use it as a nickname regardless of first name
Reid- surname, I don't see it working as a first name

Samson - fine
Luca - ok
Rory - ok
Charlie - like

Austin - fine
Maverick - dreadful
Wyatt - ok
Jenson - ok
Bryson - surname, I don't see it working as a first name
Junior - dreadful
Colson - look it up

Flynn - fine
Otis - ok, not my taste
Asher - ok
Asa - ok
Cameron - ok
Caleb - like
Micah - fine
Alec - like
Remy - ok

IsoldeWagner · 03/05/2024 16:41

DinoNuggetsRUs · 03/05/2024 15:50

So some other ones I've suggested and he's said absolutely not to (I've been trying to look for ones which kind of suit his 'American' theme too)

Flynn
Otis
Asher
Asa
Cameron
Caleb
Micah
Alec
Remy

This is the best list.
