There's a reason for being told to go safe.. Look at the names celebs have called their children! And Zowie Bowie changed his name to the pedestrian Duncan! A sleb may pull it off, because they are a sleb, whereas Joe Public probably can't!

There are plenty of nice names that aren't 'out there'. My sibling taught a Destiny - wonder how she will feel when she's 25? or 65?! Oh and a Sapphire. Some names just don't age well! I prefer more classic, timeless names. I am not a huge fan of my own name because it really, really dates me!

@DinoNuggetsRUs imagine how DS2 will feel when he's older if you call him Maverick and his sibling Max has a much nicer, more 'normal' name!? Do you think he will thank you for it?!

I really hate Sonny, sorry, I can't imagine a teen or an adult with that name. Reid is not great and will be misspelt.

Of your DHs other names, I like Austin. I like pretty much all your suggestions.

Robin is a lovely name!! Classic, but still unusual. I know a couple of men called Robin and it really suits them.

I’ve never met any female Robin’s with an ‘I’. They’ve usually spelt it with a ‘Y’, if that makes any difference

Your husband's list is out there. It's not going to go well. Personally I like Maverick but only as a second name - it's a Dad's embarrassing choice like Danger or Ace but I think it's kinda fun and second names are almost there to be embarrassing. Better to be embarrassed by Maverick rather than Norman or Roger though!

I think Samson is nice. It's different without being too out there either. In person no one is going to give you grief for it and it has a sensible short version anyway.

Of your husband's choices Austin isn't bad either. It's more on trend than many think. It's not too popular either.

But yes, pick something you really love - don't settle for something the internet thinks is safe. You'll regret it. But equally, don't pick something that's really out there to the point of stupidity.

The trick is to pick something

1. on trend but not too popular or too try hard. Don't go top 20 or something trying to fit the trend too hard.
2. something familiar enough without leaving someone going wtf.
3. something that doesn't scream 'I've copied this from a celeb'
4. And preferably something easy to spell / doesn't have multiple spellings.

Reid for example fails the last test. That's why I'd avoid that.
American style names are on trend but if you are sounding like a western you've generally gone too far.

I like Austin. Since you chose the name last time, it’s only fair that your DH gets to choose this time.

I honestly wouldn't worry what people on the internet say about names. I searched my name on here and saw comments saying people with my name would be constantly bullied and it would invoke ridicule. In reality I haven't been bullied and have people telling me it's a lovely name 🤣 for what it's worth I love the name Sonny!

I'd go with one of his original choices for your first, River or Robin.

Both nice names, I know of lovely boys called both.

Also they both go well with Max!

I was going to say that American men ime often have religious or Irish names - lots of Michael’s and Patrick’s. The girls names were more unusual and imaginative.

Any of those would do and not in fashion at present so unusual

Robin is great. Max and Robin. Lovely!

I really like Robin for a boy. Definitely the best out of all the suggestions. Number 130 for boys in England at the moment, so popular enough to be accepted and known but not common enough for there to be multiple in a year.

Sorry but yes they're awful, Sonny particularly so. Reid I could live with a huge push. What about:
