Everyone hates my baby names!

I'm really struggling to find a name for our baby boy that my partner also likes. I steamrolled him with it last time as I found all his suggestions ridiculous and our first son is called Max, much to his disdain.

There are two names we both agree on, not my favourites but I really want one we've both chosen this time:

Sonny & Reid

I've googled these, looked at mumsnet and Reddit and it seems everyone thinks they're awful names.

Names I like which husband has said absolutely not to:

Samson (a compromise on Sonny, use Sonny as a nickname and have this on bc so he can go by Sam when he's older if he finds Sonny childish)
Luca
Rory
Charlie

Husband leans towards more American names which I'm not massively a fan of.

Any suggestions? Are the ones we agree on really that awful? Idek I'm getting so stressed with it as I'm feeling like a lot of his suggestions are just ridiculous.

Donald nn Donny
Jack or John nn Jack
Casey
Benson nn Ben

Sonny isn’t bad and I really like Robin (prefer it for a boy actually). A bit retro, but what about Sandy?

In reply to the older comment - yes I know I need to take his opinion into consideration this time, I'm really trying to be positive but we have such different taste it's crazy

So baby names he's suggested so far

Austin
Maverick
Wyatt
Jenson
Bryson
Junior
Colson

Austin is great!

It would go really well with Max, too.

The rest of his list is godawful, apart from maybe Wyatt and Jenson.

Junior? Pffft. Is he a hairy handed trucker from Podunk, Oklahoma?

Reid isn't bad. It sounds a little wimpy beside the very robust Max though.

Sonny is silly.

Sonny is not good.
Reid is okay but I would spell it Reed.

Max and ..
Digby
Lincoln
Colin
John
Jordan
Charles
Howard
Sylvester
Wyatt
Franklin

Love Robin!

Reid and Sonny are both nice too – I do prefer Samson "Sonny", or maybe Orson?

How about Ezra, Asher, Archer (Archie) or Roscoe?

Esgaroth · 06/05/2024 11:15

I think Robin and Austin are both lovely and are not a radically different style to Max anyway.

Realistically a male Robin will probably be Rob or Robbie by the end of primary school anyway. It's a great, solid name and I don't think it's 'better' on a girl - equally nice for both.

User6761 · 04/05/2024 11:15

I know a doctor called Sonny and it suits him, so while it's not my personal taste it's a perfectly fine name.

I'm Scottish so Reid is a surname to me, know quite a few. I've not come across it as a first name - it works ok I think, but in general I'm not really a fan of surnames as first names (although I do like Fraser and Cameron).

The Maxs I know have brothers called Sam, Alex and Oscar.

Your H’s name choices are appalling. Yours are fine. Steamroller him again, for the sake of the child!

Agreed!

Op the other compromise would be to let DH pick the middle name.

muggart · 04/05/2024 09:20

PP had a great suggestion of Grayson nn sonny.

I actually think that both Austin & Reid are good names.

The main thing is not to call him Maverick 😂. That's potentially even worse than Sonny and Junior. You need to be fair and give DS names that are also appropriate for him as an adult. Without sounding too harsh, he's not a cutesy pet.

Max & Jenson and Max & Austin sound nice together. Not too keen on the others and especially not Max and Maverick.

Maddy70 · 04/05/2024 08:06

I love Samson

Can go with Sam a classic name that wont date.
Sonny when he is little (not really my taste if I'm honest but that gives options )

When I worked in America, I worked with Elliot, Logan, Scott, Adam, Robert, Dean and Parker.

Theoldwoman · 04/05/2024 04:28

It only matters what two people think. All are perfectly reasonable names. Love Reid.

What about Reeve?
Reece?
Regan?

DuploTrain · 04/05/2024 03:50

Are you sure you can’t get on board with Austin? It’s definitely the nicest from his list.

Not keen on Sonny or Reid personally.

Bournetilly · 04/05/2024 03:30

Go with the name you like as long as it’s not offensive. Once baby is here they will suit the name and people will get used to it and in my experience start to love the name as they associate it with the baby.

Needanewname42 · 04/05/2024 01:12

Op does DH have a name the could become (name) son, like Harry / Harrison

wizzler · 04/05/2024 00:48

Much prefer your choices to your DH's.

How would he feel about Jackson , Archer or Harrison.. then they could become Jack, Archie or Harry ?

My favourite on your list is Charlie though

Bigearringsbigsmile · 04/05/2024 00:37

Sonny abd Reid are both dreadful. I am sorry.
Luca and Rory are lovely.

Needanewname42 · 04/05/2024 00:25

I do agree there are good reasons to play safe.
It's a child, not a dog or cat, the child needs a name that they can life with without embrassment.

Sonny I'm never sure if it's meant to be like Sunny 🌞 / 👩‍👦or more like Sony hifis I assume Sonny like my son but its an infants name.

Same with Junior, how do you get taken seriously at 50 with an infants name?

StaunchMomma · 04/05/2024 00:11

Agree that it doesn't matter one bit what anyone else thinks.

That said (😁) Sonny is very '...and Cher'/American (DH has chosen a rather unpopular name-trend, there) and Reid, as others of said, seems like setting the kid up for a lifetime of shit 'bants' about whether or not they like to read. I mean, imagine if he gets to primary and struggles with reading! It's just asking for it!

Luca is nice, I think. Not hugely common, either.

Agree re Robin - much nicer for a girl.

Have you tried The Times birth announcements? Some corkers there, if you like 'different' names.

PieFaces · 03/05/2024 23:50

Mackenzie

ladygindiva · 03/05/2024 23:37

I like sonny

PieFaces · 03/05/2024 23:37

Aaron is nice too

Beautiful3 · 03/05/2024 23:31

Austin is lovely.
