Originally going to be called Jim after my granddad, but we've found out we're having a girl. Would this work?

But is your granddad's actual name Jim, or a nn for James?

I love James for a girl.

Beachs · 02/05/2024 06:55

Soo how many pets are going to be called Jimberley in the near future 😂😂😂

Orangeandgold · 02/05/2024 04:24

Don’t use this name - agree with the first person it’s a funny name.

Isn't Jiminy an American expression of shock, @LikeTalkingToLassie? Something akin to bloody hell, or OMG - she could end up with her name being used as a swear word.

I think the OP would be better using one of the feminine versions of James suggested here, like Jaime, and could shorten it to Jim if she wanted - and if it suited the child. We wanted to use Kit as a shortening for Christopher for one of our dses, but when he arrived, it just didn't suit him at all, so we had to abandon it, and now he is shortened to Chris.

The OP is naming a person, not a monument to a lost loved one, so first and foremost, the name needs to be right for the child - if that can be done with a name that honours the loved one too, all well and good, but the child should come first in the naming process.

Jimminy Cricket as in Pinnochio

Daisybuttercup12345 · 01/05/2024 23:11

Awful. Reminds me of an elephant.

LikeTalkingToLassie · 01/05/2024 14:23

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius It's a boy's name, but this is MN so it could be unisex.
Norah is quite popular despite ''Bloody Norah!' and Betsy is used despite 'Hell to Betsy'.

tommyhoundmum · 01/05/2024 13:38

Jemima

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/05/2024 13:08

Jiminy would be quite nice for a girl. Not if your surname is Cricket.

@T1Dmama Jacqueline is the feminine of Jacques not Jack. Lots of male French names were given feminine versions like Paule (Paul), Alberte (Albert), Laurence (Laurent), Emmanuelle (Emmanuel) etc

Jimberly - Name Meaning — Is Your Name Helping You?

Your name, Jimberly, makes you clever, proficient, and analytical. You could be inventive along practical, mechanical lines. Your natural skepticism is overcome ...
😂

That’s a good idea actually OP if you’re still there …

I agree. Middle name “Jay” might work as well.

Why does it HAVE to start Jim?…. Just use the female version.
it doesn’t have to be spelt the same!
like Jack to Jacqueline. Or Charles to the female version ‘Charlotte’…
maybe Jim could be Gemma or Jenna..
or of course you could just save Jim fir when you have son,

I agree. Jim being a version of James (which is derived from Jacob) would give OP a few additional opportunities:

Jackie, Jacqueline, Jamesina, Jacomina, Giacoma, Giacomina, Jacobine, Coba etc…

Some of these wouldn’t be my cup of tea but they are much better than Jimberley (in my personal opinion).

T1Dmama · 01/05/2024 09:24

I’d go with Kimberly. Shorten it to kimmy, and Nick name her jimmy

Best laugh for a long time. Best name “Jim-Jams” and best line, “she left him for a taxi driver.”
Had to wipe away the tears.

What was the post about?

Was that the one about sliding at a soft play? 🤦🏻‍♀️

MegsNaiceJam · 01/05/2024 00:45

Instead of a Slim Jim*, you could have a Slimberly Jimberly. Lose weight, feel great. Jimberly, for your nutritional needs.

*American “mechanically recovered meat” stick. A slimberly Jimberly would be made of high protein for busy mums on the go.

It is one of the best threads I have seen for ages @oakleaffy 😆

I don't know whether the OP is serious or not, or meant this as a laugh, but I bet she didn't think it would take off like it did! 😂

At least if she just did do it for a laugh, it was unintentional, and not a deliberate attempt to try to get into 'Classics' like a poster did earlier on AIBU. It stands out a mile when people are deliberately trying too hard.

What was the post about?

How about Jim Jiminy Jim Jiminy Jim Jim Cheroo - you need to sing it in fake Cockney accent a la Dick van Dyke

🤣Oh my goodness..... This is the Thread that keeps on giving!
God bless you, @Netruscan - you have given so many people a laugh- The name Jimberly now surely has to be a mumsnet classic.

If you do decide to name your Daughter Jimberly, people will say ''What, after the Mumsnet classic?

And you can rightly say ''I was the trendsetter, thank you very much''.

MyLovelyPurse · 30/04/2024 21:25

My aunt and uncle were called Big Jim and Little Jim (their names were James and Jemima). I think Little Jim would work well OP.

Calliopespa · 30/04/2024 21:16

OldPerson · 30/04/2024 19:09

Oh dear.

Personally, I'd follow 33rd US President Harry S. Truman just give the daughter the middle name "J."

The S in Harry S Truman does not stand for anything - rather it honours both his grandfathers - Soloman Young and (Andersen) Shipp Truman.

Grandfather honoured. Grandfather mentioned every time people ask what the J stands for.

Parents free to think of their own name for their daughter.

That’s a good idea actually OP if you’re still there …

Jim is a simply awful name to begin with.

I know a little Jim and actually it’s super cute on him. It is a him though …

Beautiful3 · 30/04/2024 20:55

Haha 😂 So funny!
