Boys names that are out of the ordinary, or related to 'nature'

We don't know if we are having a girl or a boy and if we have a boy I have no idea what we are going to call him!

Help!

Our first daughter is called Daisy Harriet, and I've decided that if we have a girl the next one will be called Clover (possibly second name, Amelie) - corny I know, but it's because Daisy and Clover grow together. (she says a bit sheepishly).

I love names rooted in nature, but boys names are very hard to come across. I like the name Cyrus (no nature link there at all by the way), but apart from that I'm drawing a blank. I briefly considered the name Leif (kind of norweigian name I think, but it's bordering on sounding too hippy). I don't mind the name Seth, but it reminds me of that old bloke with a flat cap who used to be on Emmerdale.

These are the other names I've considered, but they do have to go with a very boring English surname, so some of them would sound ridiculous.

Lorne
Cassius
Cyrus
Juno
Isaac (meaning laughter)
Oren (tree)
Roden (from the valley of the reeds)
Varden (meaning green)
Merle (meaning blackbird)

Does anyone have any bright ideas?

Dragonbutter · 01/04/2008 23:14

Innes is a boys name meaning island

cadelaide · 01/04/2008 23:13

I really don't think that a Daisy and Clover will be teased particularly.

People are increasingly "creative" in naming their offspring and ime children take a lot less notice of unusual names than they did when i was young.

How about Tod/Todd? Means Fox I believe.

(Can't stand it myself but heigh-ho!)

chaoskay · 01/04/2008 23:13

Roden is definitely out the window now! Hadn't thought of that! Made me laugh then!

As far as I know Merle and Juno are girls and boys names? Still, I'm not that struck on those.

I liked the name Oscar for a while, until I found a neibour's dog who had escaped from his garden. His tag said Oscar on it, so that one is no longer an option either.

Considering Logan, but that's got bugger all to do with nature, it just sounds good - means hollow though, which isn't exactly inspirational, and I think it's getting to be a more common name, which I'm not keen on.

It's all just too difficult! And once we've decided on a first boys name, we'll have to come up with a middle name too! (melodramatic me!)

edam · 01/04/2008 23:11

That link is weird about Neil, btw, most baby name books give it as German meaning something like warrier or champion, IIRC.

cadelaide · 01/04/2008 23:09

I know a boy Merle.

Well, he's about 60 actually, American, lovely man.

Dragonbutter · 01/04/2008 23:09

CD, , and a mighty fine beer at that

edam · 01/04/2008 23:09

You do realise that sisters named Daisy and Clover are likely to be teased a bit, don't you?

Isaac's OK. Rowan's nice. Cassius would only work if you are black (since the most famous person with that name in modern times was the man who became Mohammed Ali). Juno's a female name, she was a Goddess.

Lubyloo · 01/04/2008 23:09

Basil?

TheFallenMadonna · 01/04/2008 23:08

I know an Oak(ley).

But I prefer Seth.

Dragonbutter · 01/04/2008 23:07

Star is nice

What about using names from lovely places you've been or that are important to you?

LynetteScavo · 01/04/2008 23:02

Personally I wouldn't put Daisy and Clover together.........

There are a few Seths around now, so it seems to be more popular.

Don't like Roden (Rodent), or Varden.

Leif is fab, certainly not too hippyish, but not too sure about with Daisy.
