Maiden name as a first name?

HashB · 26/04/2024 16:02

We have really struggled with names for boys. Hayes is my maiden name and will ‘die out’ this generation as we’re a family of girls and no one kept it. Would it be strange as a first name or is it better saved for middle?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

My point was she didn’t ask for a lecture from you or anyone else on her choice.
No one “reigns supreme” in my world and I’ve more important things to get exercised about than names. It’s interesting how it’s often the name-warriors who are least feminist in other aspects of life.

She commented that she was sad her family’s name would die out in the very first post. So pointing out that it actually doesn’t have to isn’t “nasty”.

It’s clearly a complete coincidence that in 90+% of cases where one of the partners changes their name it’s the woman, even if that risks her family name dying out. No possible other reason why it seems to be this way AT ALL.

(in what way am I not feminist?!)

what’s the point of being so nasty?

I assume OP has already changed her name. She’s hardly likely to change it back now.

(I kept my birth surname and would prefer if women did in general, but I’m not nasty about it!)

dontforgetme · 27/04/2024 10:22

I love it op!

Stop being a pushover and give your kid your name

That's not what OP asked? She's made that clear.

🙄

If you like it, use it. I think it sounds really nice, for a boy or a girl.

It’s very common in N Ireland with the result that there are some quite strange names. Hayes, in comparison is unusual but not strange and is a lot better than some of the terrible names kids get lumbered with these days!

Itsaloadofbollocksbut · 26/04/2024 16:10

You can all use Hayes as a surname, surely?

(Why on earth women are changing their names in this day and age is absolutely beyond me.)

OP didn’t ask for an opinion on her surname.
Not everyone likes over long and unwieldy double-barrelled names. Some of us also like all members of our family having the same name.

SheilaFentiman · 27/04/2024 08:09

A minor point to bear in mind - if you and DH ever split up, would you want to switch back to your birth surname?

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 27/04/2024 07:55

My DS has my maiden name as his middle name. It’s actually a recognised male name though (like Thomas or Scott). I would use Hayes as a middle name instead.

Moveoverdarlin · 27/04/2024 07:53

I would use it as a middle name. It will end up getting spelt as Haze if you use it as a first name.

theduchessofspork · 27/04/2024 07:49

It’s a nice tradition in Scotland and the US to do this, but I don’t think Hayes works well as a first name sadly

Could you add it to the end of your husband’s surname to make a doubled barrelled name? Hayes would likely combine well with most things. That would make a lot of sense if you’re bothered about it dying out.

Alarmingghhh · 27/04/2024 07:49

Deardear17 · 27/04/2024 07:46

I think it’s actually really cool as a first name!
(also I misread the title and thought you were using maiden as a first name lol)

Pinkl · 27/04/2024 07:45

I like it! Especially because of the meaning behind it.

FindingMeno · 27/04/2024 07:44

Will make a great first name!

And me!

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 27/04/2024 07:26

As a first name people will hear it as Haze , v boho / hippy.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 27/04/2024 06:54

I don't think it works as a first name.
Fine as a middle name though.
Also fine as a second name.

I actually love it! It works well as a maiden name.

A friend did the same with her maiden name!

As a first name 🤦‍♀️.

On the app and can't edit.

atomicginge · 27/04/2024 06:34

I like Hayes for a first name. I say go for it! The reason behind it is meaningful and it's cool sounding!

Beachs · 27/04/2024 00:23

It’s ok as a first name. My friend did this for her DS she named him Thomas her maiden name.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 26/04/2024 22:37

It’s lovely, and a really nice idea too if you can’t double barrel.
very common in UK in previous generations.
Fitzwilliam Darcy of course had his mum’s maiden name.
i have two friends my age (late 40’s) who also have their mum’s maiden name as a first name - Alexander and Thomas
