I liked it when it first got its boom but I think it’s overused now… there will prob be other Indies/Indias in class. You could definitely come up with something similar that’s just more unique!

Names I think are similar vibe to India/Indie…

Ines, Iris, Ivy, Lola, Roxy, Esme, Effie, Luna (bit overused), Cleo, Astrid, Frankie, Coco, Sienna, Saffron/Saffy, Jasmine.

I love it but know two puppies called Indy so wouldn't be able to use it.

We used to know an American family with an older dog called Indiana (their home state) - who could evacuate an entire house for half an hour every time he (frequently) blew off.

I think it's pretty awful and sounds like a nickname. It's also a twee word for a private school, as in "DD goes to a lovely nurturing little indie...." bleugh.

Indira is a fine name.

GlowyJoey · 25/04/2024 23:43

Absolutely love the name Indie - it was one on my list!

I also think it works perfectly on its own and doesn’t need to be a nickname. Names suggested by PP’s like India are completely different to Indie in my opinion. But I’m also one of those who prefers Lottie to Charlotte, Gigi to Georgia etc and I appear to be in the minority on Mumsnet 😂

BingoMarieHeeler · 25/04/2024 23:24

Bit dated by now unfortunately. I like the sound of it but not the connotations.
Spelling Indy just makes me think of private school.
I know 2 female Indianas, couple of Indias and an Indigo.

Unopenedpackofmenssocks · 25/04/2024 23:21

Indie spelling makes me think music, newspaper or school.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 25/04/2024 22:54

I'd go for Indigo as a full name, with Indie as the nick name.

Hiker50 · 25/04/2024 22:52

I hate names which end with ie. It looks untidy and trashy. Indy is not awful. But when they're 34 will it still suit them?

Joolsin · 25/04/2024 22:52

I love it, for a girl

TheOriginalEmu · 25/04/2024 22:50

I like it for a girl, not so keen for a boy. Indie would be preferred spelling.

Unopenedpackofmenssocks · 25/04/2024 22:50

I’d spell it Indi.

Sockmate123 · 25/04/2024 22:50

Hate it, sorry 😞

HerRoyalNotness · 25/04/2024 22:44

I love it,
short for India or Indira

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 25/04/2024 22:43

I like it, was at school with one in the nineties

SabreIsMyFave · 25/04/2024 22:14

No way. (Sorry!)

SammyScrounge · 25/04/2024 22:10

No no
That's my neighbour's cat's name (spelled with. -ie)

sunshine2go · 25/04/2024 22:05

I would go with India and NN indie personally. But if you like it, go for it! It doesn't matter what I or others think 🙂

Veryverycalmnow · 25/04/2024 21:59

I like it. Indies I've worked with in schools have always been nice and that's how I judge names!

Okayden · 25/04/2024 21:56

It's a great name for a toddler or maybe a teen but not so much for an adult.

RollnRock · 25/04/2024 21:41

In terms of names I think you've struck upon the holy grail!

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/04/2024 21:41

I like it, even though I usually prefer more traditional names. It’s got a modern, slightly edgy / cool feel to it, to me, and I like that it’s short, simple, not too overused and certainly suits the teens I know called Indie very well (boys and girls). I haven’t met an adult called Indie yet so I find it harder to imagine for adults, but I’m sure that will change when all the young Indie’s grow up!

Lwrenn · 25/04/2024 21:40

I know a few indie's, one I went to school with so over 30 years ago now.

They've all be absolutely lovely. Truly lovely wee souls.

Theimpossiblegirl · 25/04/2024 21:39

I love it but know two puppies called Indy so wouldn't be able to use it.

Echobelly · 25/04/2024 21:38

I might have as a nickname, but I'd give officially a full name, be that Indiana, India, Indira.
