Hi there,

expecting our first baby in a few months. We don’t know the gender.

the leading boy’s name is of irish origin.

for girls, we’ve a few options, the two front runners are Lucia (Loo-see-ah) or Clodagh (Clo-da - Irish origin).

middle name is likely to be Anne.

very undecided on which to go for- all advice welcomed!

I've always liked Clodagh and was a bit disappointed when DH didn't.

Lucia is a nice name but the many pronunciations would put me off.

Overthebow · 27/04/2024 08:16

Clodagh if it rhymes with Yoda as pp says, as that’s pretty. Although they’ll have to spell it out for people a lot. I like Lucia but have always pronounced it with a ch, I don’t really like the s version and I think most would assume ch.

Clodagh I think - unusual and interesting

And Lucia will be said Lu-Chee-uh half the time which will be annoying

Also there are quite a lot of Lucias and an awful lot of Lucys about so it may end up feeling a bit dull

atomicginge · 26/04/2024 23:46

Clodagh it's less common than Lucia

Misspotterscat · 26/04/2024 19:22

Both are lovely. I considered clodagh but when discussing it people were pronouncing it differently so I discounted it. Still really like it though.

Wrennie4 · 26/04/2024 18:30

Lucia is beautiful. Clodagh is very ugly and clunky.

I always thought that Clodagh was one of very few names I think is genuinely ugly but, seeing the overwhelmingly positive response, I think I'm probably pronouncing it wrong in my head (I've only ever seen it written down). I thought it was 'clod-uh' but is it 'cloh-da'? I think the latter is pretty.

I'm not keen on Lucia think it's ok and I prefer your chosen pronounciation to Loo-chee-a.

Our little girls name we pronounce like Cloh - da....if you are saying it right it should rhyme with Yoda lol

AndBeyond · 26/04/2024 18:09

Clodagh in my (Ulster) accent the Clo part of Clodagh rhymes with go or glow. Not clod.

Clodagh is wonderful!

garlictwist · 26/04/2024 03:47

Sorry but Clodagh is very ugly sounding to me.

DramaAlpaca · 25/04/2024 21:31

Clodagh is beautiful. I'm in Ireland and it's uncommon. Not sure Anne works with it as a middle name because it runs together, but it probably doesn't matter.

Whatisityoucantface · 25/04/2024 21:29

I absolutely love Clodagh and so nearly used it. Please choose this excellent name

KirstenBlest · 25/04/2024 21:15

Not by me.

I like Clodagh but would it be mispronounced in the UK as
Clod ag ?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/04/2024 20:38

Depending on where you are it might be said as Cloderanne.

Ooh yeah, Cloderanne or Lucieranne aren't great.

goldenretrievermum5 · 25/04/2024 20:38

I adore Lucia, although do prefer the Italian pronunciation. Elegant and classy

Really dislike Clodagh - I find it quite clunky and ugly to be honest. There are so many far nicer Irish names around - Maeve, Cara and Fiadh are gorgeous

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/04/2024 20:36

They are both beautiful names but neither of them goes perfectly with Anne, because they both end in "a" and it's a bit hard to say. Not really a problem though.

bows101 · 25/04/2024 20:33

I love Clodagh. I was thinking about it the other day, how random to see it on MN.

ihatecoffee · 25/04/2024 20:31

I used to know a Clodagh but her nickname was clodhopper Clode (she was quite hefty)

For that reason I'd go with Lucia!

KirstenBlest · 25/04/2024 20:25

I think the -a Anne is a bit tricky. Depending on where you are it might be said as Cloderanne. Middle names are not used much normally.

Miloandfreddy · 25/04/2024 20:22

Clodagh is beautiful. What is the boys name out of interest as I'm a nosy cow.

ColourByNumbers88 · 25/04/2024 20:21

Clodagh.

But Clodagh Ann sounds a bit odd when you speak it.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 25/04/2024 20:05

Any Clodagh I've known has been pretty cool.

Lucia is nice but as pp mentioned there are a variety of pronunciations.

shoopshoopdedoo · 25/04/2024 20:03

Love Clodagh!

Not so keen on Lucia.
