Anthea - yes or no?

HmmAnthea · 22/04/2024 13:16

I think I quite like Anthea for baby DD (expected early September). But... is it old fashioned in a bad way?

Surname starting with F. I like Thea too, but Thea F- is a mouthful.

Thank you!

Thea is probably hanging on to Theo and Mia's coat-tails popularity-wise.
I find them all a bit insubstantial.

Anthea is OK. i'm probably put off by

I feel like I should love this name. I like Thea a lot!

I loved the E Nesbit novels and Edwardian era names are back in vogue (see Florence, Edith, Mabel et all).

Unfortunately Anthea Turner reference is the first thing I think of and that's a bit off-putting (I feel bad about saying that - what has poor old Anthea Turner ever done to hurt me apart from appearing on TV all smiley - but there it is - she puts me off the name).

How about Trianthe (tree-AN-thee) a similar Greek name meaning Three Flowers.

Ha I was thinking just this! Poor old Anthea sparking such a negative reaction when her only crime is to be a bit uncool

35andThriving · 22/04/2024 14:52

I like it. At the end of the day it's going to get mixed reactions because it's not in the top 10. It's a good, solid name though. To me it feels more complete as a name than Thea, even though statically Thea is more popular.

IsadoraQuagmire · 22/04/2024 14:41

Well I like it. I like Althea too.

theduchessofspork · 22/04/2024 14:36

Too lispy for me

Athena is nice though
or Sanchia
Dorothea..

Makes me think of Anthea Redfern - “Give us a twirl Anthea!

But then I’m depressingly old.

BodyKeepingScore · 22/04/2024 14:15

I'm not a fan of this. To me it's kind of in the "Michelle/Tracy" band of names. Just dated and a bit ugly

SallyWD · 22/04/2024 14:15

I don't like it but I really love Althea. Strange how one letter can make such a difference.

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/04/2024 14:14

With having a F surname it may turn in to Anfea F or Fea F. Which is fine for most people but it would irrationally annoy me.

DuchessOfSausage · 22/04/2024 14:11

I'm sorry, but I strongly dislike Anthea, and Thea too.

I can't articulate why, but I don't seem to like 'Th' sounds in names for some probably quite irrational reason.
This is me.

I don't mind names like Elizabeth but Thea, Theo, Beth, etc seem lispy.

I'd add that I like Ruth, Thora and Dorothy because the names seem strong but not Theodora, Dorothea, Timothy, Nathan, Nathaniel, Lilith.
Athena seems stronger than Anthea.

Anthea Turner puts me off it.

Talipesmum · 22/04/2024 13:23

Really like it, my reference point is Five Children and It book series. She was a good character. I think it’s a nicely old fashioned, practical, sensible sounding name.

Yes, this was on my baby name list too because like you I read (and loved) the E Nesbit novels.

RosaRoja · 22/04/2024 13:53

The N-T combination makes it sound nasal.

Athena is gorgeous, however.

HmmAnthea · 22/04/2024 13:42

@Chinuplippyon is that Al-thea or All-thea? Thanks

I think al-thea. Al like Alice. Stress on the second syllable rather than first as opposed to in Anthea.

I do like how it sounds though.

Anthea Turner didn't cross my mind. I guess she wouldn't be relevant to the next generation anyway... But yeah I don't want to make people think wow poor kid haha.

As a grateful dead fan I much, much prefer Althea

Janedoe82 · 22/04/2024 13:38

Immediately made me think of Anthea Turner and the flake advert.

cassiatwenty · 22/04/2024 13:38

Damnyoureyessir · 22/04/2024 13:23

Anthea turner makes it seem very mumsy. Also it autocorrects to anthrax. Althea is a bit nicer.

Anthrax, well that would be an unfortunate nickname 😅

HmmAnthea · 22/04/2024 13:37

Haha ok this is a lot of no votes!

@Talipesmum and the bonus is you can use the nickname panther? ☺️

WelshWannabe · 22/04/2024 13:33

Not keen.

Prefer Althea or Athena.

It does sound a bit dated. How about Andrea?

Andrea is even worse! Dreary Andrea. Too much like sex pest Andrew as well.

Oreosareawful · 22/04/2024 13:26

No

CorylusAgain · 22/04/2024 13:25
