I am am having a little girl in June I loveeee the name Rowan for a girl however my husband does not like the W lol so we could go for spelling 'roan' tho I don't want people to pronounce it wrong I still want it to sound like ro-an, how would you say 'roan'?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Roan is not an alternative spelling for Rowan it's a different word/name. Like others have said it rhymes with bone or loan.

PineappleTime · 22/04/2024 05:34

Roan is a word already and it rhymes with bone. You can't just decide that letters are pronounced some random way when it doesn't follow rules of the English language. There is nothing in the oa diagraph that would allow for an o-a pronunciation without adding other letters. You might get the sound if you spelt it Roanne but then the stress would be on the last syllable. If you like the name Rowan spell it properly or choose a different name.

I would also rhyme it with bone, like loan with an r

Nope, i’d read Roan and pronounce it to rhyme with Bone.

Exactly !!! your proving my point everyone will pronounce it differently and not Rowan which is what the op is after.

I think if he doesn’t like the W in Rowan he actually doesn’t like the name

DappledThings · 22/04/2024 05:16

Roan is a boy's name.

LittleSparklyStar · 22/04/2024 05:16

Roan is a colour used to describe various animals including horses and Guinea pigs. Rowan is a beautiful name

What is the problem with W?

please don’t do it - she will have a lifetime of telling people her name and how to spell it.

Roan will be pronounced Ro-Anne or Roy-Anne

Upsidedownpineapplecake · 22/04/2024 05:06

Not that I am saying Rowan isn’t. I like it as a name

Upsidedownpineapplecake · 22/04/2024 05:01

Why not the W ?
Roan I would pronounce rhyming with loan.
Roanne is another girls name associated with a tree do you like it?
silly suggestion- tell him you are now fixed on a different tree name such as Myrtle. Maybe Roman will look more appealing
More sensible suggestion change to
a nice tree name like Juniper

WaitingfortheTardis · 22/04/2024 05:00

Roan to me would rhyme with Rome and bone. I think if you go for Rowan, which is a lovely name, you do need the w. I'm sure dh will come round to the w when he realizes it will make things easier for your daughter.
